9 Start of the U.S.-Mexican War
Polk (American President) asked Congress for a declaration of war, which was issued on May 13, 1846

10 Causes of the U.S.-Mexican War
Make a Bubble Chart The Mexican government refused to acknowledge Texas as a new republic. However, the Mexican government could not take military action because France, Great Britain, and the United States did recognize Texas as an independent country. Polk wanted to fix the southern boundary of Texas at the Rio Grande but Mexico wanted it to be the Nueces.

11 Disputed Territory

12 End of the U.S.-Mexican War
The war ended on February 2, 1848, with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty ceded to the United States the land that now comprises the states of California, Utah, and Nevada, as well as parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Colorado. Mexico also renounced all rights to Texas. During the war 1,773 Americans were killed in action and 4,152 were wounded. Mexican casualty reports are incomplete, but it’s estimated that approximately 25,000 were killed or wounded between

13 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Ended the Mexican War Mexican Cession – The southwest is claimed by the United States Mexico accepts Texas as part of the United States and the United States paid 15 million dollars to Mexico. The Rio Grande River became the border between Mexico and Texas.

14 Population Growth Migration of Americans to Texas
Immigration of Europeans (Germans to the Hill Country) They, just like the early settlers of Texas, were attracted by the cheap land and mild climate.

15 Dispute between Texas and New Mexico
With the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Texas was given about half of present day New Mexico but New Mexico had no interest in becoming part of Texas. Slavery was the reason some people opposed the Texans’ claim to lands in New Mexico. Some members of Congress wanted to end slavery, some wanted it to spread, and other just wanted it confined to states where it already existed.

16 Compromise of 1850 In 1850, Congress set the western border of Texas where it now exists. Texas received $10 million dollars in return for giving up its claim to parts of New Mexico. This paid off the debt of Texas. California entered the Union as a free state. It would not permit slavery. The other new lands in the west would decide for themselves whether to allow slavery or not. The areas of Texas that were home to the majority of the state’s slaveholders were South and East Texas.

17 Do you think this was the end to the slavery issue in the United States?
