Wednesday 24 th September 2014 KS1 SATs Meeting

Outline What are SATs? An outline of the tasks and tests Teacher assessment Levels The results What you can do to help Individual children will not be discussed.

What are SATs? Children are assessed in; Reading Writing Mathematics. In KS1 the emphasis is on teacher assessment, the tests support this judgement.

Levels W12c2b2a3 W = Working towards level 1 Each level has subdivisions. C – just entering the level, not yet secure B – secure in the level A – secure and moving towards next level National Average for end of Year 2 > 2B Level 1 and 3 subdivisions not shown on SATs results.

Teacher Assessment Children will not know that they are taking SATs, done as subtly as possible over a period of 3 weeks. Teacher assessment will be the primary judgement for awarding the overall level achieved by the child. If children do not perform to their best ability in a test this is not the end of the world! On going teacher assessment is used to support the final level score. This level reflects the work which your child has achieved over the course of the year. Teachers have collected a vast array of evidence throughout the year which will be used to evidence and support the level judgement submitted by your child's teacher.

Tasks and Tests Assessment Area ReadingReading paper [Level 2] or [Level 3] orReading task with teacher. Sharing a book; running record, and discussion. WritingSpelling Test [All] Long task [All] Approx 45 mins Short task [All] Approx 30 mins MathsTest paper [Level 2] or [Level 3] Chn can have help reading questions. orMaths task with teacher.

What can you do to help? Don’t panic! You do not need to do more than what you would normally do at home to support your child. Being this young age, it is very important that your children are not ‘stressed’ out about doing ‘tests.’ The more relaxed you are about them the less they will worry or even be aware that tests are taking place at all. Read together every day and ask questions about the story. This will support the understanding of what has been read- not just fluency for reading. Use number problems in every day life, at the shops, on the bus, telling the time etc. Continue to work on targets discussed at parents evening and most recent report.

Reporting You will receive a printed sheet showing your child's SAT results. The school has been externally moderated by the Local Authority and has received an exemplary grading for the practises taking place for evidencing children’s assessment in Key Stage 1. The outcome of what happens with results will not affect in any way the arrangements for Year 3 These results will supports Year 3 teachers/ SLT in planning work interventions/challenging work etc. so that we can 'hit the ground running'!
