Chinese Information Processing (I): Basic Concepts and Practice Unit 3: Processing Chinese Text

Processing Chinese text This unit discusses software that companies and individuals have developed, which, when properly integrated and configured, provides the ability to create, format, read, print, send, or receive Chinese text electronically. We will focus on the text and word processing (creating, formatting, reading and printing) and leave the other issues (sending and receiving) for communication part.

Some important concepts to remember: Freeware, Shareware and Commercial software Freeware Shareware Commercial software

Freeware – is free, meaning that there is no fee to use it. But it is not public domain, which means that the developer still maintains the copyright.

Shareware – is usually freely available, but there is a minimal fee that you must pay the developer in order to continue using it. They allow you effectively try- before-you-buy. If you end up regularly using shareware programs, I strongly encourage you to pay the license fee in fairness to the software author who spent countless hours developing it.

Commercial software – some programs are available as demo version at no charge, which means that you are able to try- before-you-buy, but unlike shareware, there are many restrictions, such as the inability to print or save files. I strongly encourage you to seek out a demo version before you buy it, either at the company’s web site or by making a phone call.

Three Ways to Process Chinese Text Using the independent Chinese text editors or word processors Using the computers with Chinese operating systems Using the computers with English operating systems and Chinese environment

Chinese text editor and Chinese word processor A text editor is the most basic text processing tool, which allows you to input and save text. The functions are very basic, but, believe or not, there are cases when you would choose a text editor over a word processor. For example, the characters and formatting that you are limited to with text editors are precisely what usually travels well through , while some special formatting form a word processor does not travel well over .

Chinese text editor: Chinese WPS (rarely seen now) Byx (developed in the U.S. during 80s) NJSTAR (DOS version, developed in Australia during 80s) English text editors: pico and emacs for unix system, text editor for DOS, notepad for Windows. They lack functions of word wrapping, font size and style changing.

Chinese word processor: NJSTAR NJSTAR has DOS version and Windows version. The DOS version is a text editor, while the Windows version is an independent word processor. The Windows version has many functions such as changing the font size and styles, column setting, page number configuration, etc. DOS version only allows you to input and print Chinese text. English word processors: Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Wordpad, Nisus (for Mac)

Chinese operating systems CCDOS – a DOS base Chinese operating system widely used in 80s Pwindows for China – a fully localized Windows based Chinese operating system used in 90s, handles simplified characters only Cwindows for Taiwan and Hong Kong - a fully localized Windows based Chinese operating system used in 90s, handles traditional characters only Chinese Windows 2000 and XP – Windows based Chinese operating systems, handle both traditional and simplified characters including special characters used in Hong Kong and Singapore.

English operating system with Chinese environment One can use English operating system with other third-party Chinese software that provides Chinese environment. DOS based – two most popular programs used in 80s: Kuochiao and Eten (Taiwan)

Windows based - there are four most popularly used Chinese software that provide the Chinese environment to English Windows (3.x, 95, 98, 2000, NT, ME, XP): - Chinese Star - TwinBridge - UnionWay - RichWin

Chinese Language Kit for Mac Apple Computer’s Chinese Language Kit (CLK for short) is actually two Language Kits in one. It includes installers for both simplified and traditional characters. It comes with many True Type fonts and a variety of input methods.

Advantages and disadvantages of using Chinese word processors, Chinese Operating Systems and English Operating System with Chinese Environment

Compatibility When English Windows are upgraded, the Chinese software that provides Chinese environment may not be compatible with the new version of English applications. The independent Chinese word processors may still work. Chinese operating systems do not have compatibility problems.

Ability to surf the net The Chinese word processors cannot be used to view the web pages in Chinese, while computers with Chinese environment and the computers with Chinese systems can do it.

Document extension and applications Document extension is an important concept to remember in computing. Each document has a name that is compose by two parts: name and extension. For example, a Word document may be exercise.doc ‘exercise’ is a document name and ‘.doc’ is the extension. The function of the extension is to allow computers to select the proper application to process the document. By double clicking on the file name ‘exercise.doc’, the computer will activate Microsoft Word to process it.

Text document:.txt Microsoft Word document:.doc Wordperfect document:.wp Web page:.htm,.html

Graphic documents:.bmp,.jpg,.gif,.tiff Sound documents:.wav,.au,.ram,.rm Movie:.mov,.avi NJSTAR documents:.gb,.big5 or.b5,.njx A rich text format document:.rtf

A rich text format document is a text file with formatting (font size, color, columns, etc.). It can be opened by various word processors at both IBM and MAC platforms.

Documents with various extensions may have different icons on Windows desktop. The specific icon displayed on your desktop depends on the applications installed on your computer.

Note: If you create a Chinese document using NJSTAR and you want Microsoft Word to edit it, you need to save the document as.rtf file. Vice versa, if you create a Chinese document using Microsoft Word, you need to save it as.rtf file so that you can use NJSTAR to open and edit it.

Note: On most computers with Microsoft Word, the default icon for.rtf file is a box with letter “W”. Double clicking the filename will activate Word, not NJSTAR. Therefore, you need to open NJSTAR first, then use File, Open to open the.rtf file.
