Every Child Matters

Every Child Matters Every child Matters: form of legislation  There are 5 outcomes: 1. Stay safe 2. Be healthy 3. Enjoy and achieve 4. Make a positive contribution 5. Achieve economic well-being

What are we going to talk about?  Different transitions a child goes through  How parents and the school can help in these transitions  High Scope/ Project Approach

Home to Nursery Transition

Home to nursery/crèche When a child is born parents receive invitation to childcare centre where they: get help and information participate in classes parents training Children can attend the crèche and nursery.

Home to Nursery/Crèche at 2.5 years old children are ready for nursery Childcare centre / nursery school What can schools do? What can parents do?

Nursery to Primary School

Nursery to Primary School  At 5 years old children are ready for primary school. What can the school/community do?  What can parents do?

Culture Visits  We visited a few museums and art galleries.  These offer workshops and activities for parents and children.

High Scope This technique is explained through the following story: I WANT TO FLY

The Wheel of Pedagogy

Children learn best by being actively involved with the world. High Scope Children learn best by being actively involved with the world.

Imagine a place where no dream is too big!!! High Scope Imagine a place where no dream is too big!!!

Project Approach THE DINOSAUR  This technique is explained through the following story: THE DINOSAUR

This teacher created a book so children can write their own stories ...

Our Perspective We have witnessed both the High Scope approach and the Project approach to teaching. The group has recognised that teachers must value the individuality of each child within all approaches. We do not think that one particular method is ‘right’. They all can work together

Quote from a Parent: ‘I think I listen to them more and show an interest in what they do now. I try to look at things from their (children’s) point of view instead of just assuming they understand’ Pamela Graham Graham.P. 2009. ‘An Introduction to the High/Scope Approach’ Care and Education:Early Years.
