Skills Matter at HACA Skills Matter at HACA It is very important when you are writing a series of sentences that the sentences do not all sound the same. Sentences that all sound the same are not interesting to a reader. To help with this problem, you can vary, which means “change” or “rearrange,” your sentence beginnings. You can vary your sentence openings by: 1. Use two adjectives Ripe, juicy peaches made my Grandmother’s pie the best. 2. Use an appositive Sheila, the smartest girl in the class, received an award. 3. Use an infinitive To win an award was a proud achievement for Natasha. 4. Use a prepositional phrase In the high tower, the princess waits for her prince to arrive. 5. Use parallel structure Handsome and fearless, the prince climbed the tower to his princess. 6. Begin with speech 7. Use an adverb 8. Use a verb

The boy in the white shorts is jumping too. He is her little brother. Skills Matter at HACA Skills Matter at HACA Year 9 Answers Possible Answer Shining down, the sun glittered across the beach. Fluffy clouds moved in the bright blue sky. Colours of green merged to form the sea. Wearing a green swimsuit and smiling, the blond haired girl jumped up and down on the sand. Reflecting in her sunglasses was her little brother, who was also jumping in the sand. Down by the water were three more figures.

Skills Matter at HACA Skills Matter at HACA Year 10 Task Have a go at rewriting this paragraph, improving the sentence openings. I can hear the market sellers shouting at the tops of their voices to attract the attention of the shoppers. I walk through the crowded market place, where people are pushing and shoving each other and muttering under their breath. I smell exotic aromas coming from the food stalls. I pass the fish stall, which reminds me of the sea. I can almost taste the salt on my tongue. I stop to buy a souvenir from one of the brightly coloured stalls. I make my way towards a stallholder yelling, ‘Candyfloss’. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________

Skills Matter at HACA Skills Matter at HACA Year 10 Answers Sample Answer Shouting at the tops of their voices, the market sellers are trying to attract the attention of the shoppers. To reach the other side of the square, I make my way through the crowded market place, where people are pushing and shoving each other and muttering under their breath. Exotic aromas drift from the food stalls, making my mouth water. As I pass the fish stall, I can almost taste the salt on my tongue; it reminds me of the sea. Briefly, I stop to buy a souvenir from one of the brightly coloured stalls, when I hear a stallholder yelling, ‘Candyfloss’. I head straight over.
