Background Knowledge The Big Wave could have happened in real life, so its genre is realistic fiction. A small Japanese fishing village is hit by a destructive tidal wave. Survivors of a physical disaster is typically followed by an emotional trauma. Pearl S. Buck lived at one time in a little Japanese house on a hillside above the sea, overlooking a small fishing village on the beach below it. One summer, a big awave came up and washed the village away. The book, The Big Wave, grew out of her memory of this event. And so, in a way, the story of Jiya and Kino may be said to be a true one.

Purposes for reading As you preview this story’s first few pages, what do you think it has to do with survival? What does the title of the story mean?
