A nswer the question! C ite the evidence! E xplain, elaborate, and extend your answer! S ummarize what you have written! Now take everything that you have written and put it into a complete paragraph! WHAT IS A.C.E.S?

A question or series of questions about things that we have covered in class the day before. You will be required to answer these questions for credit at the beginning of class (right after you’re A.C.E.S) each day! Make sure you pay attention to what we talk about each day in class! WHAT IS A KNIGHT’S CHARGE?

WEIRD DISNEY FACT OF THE DAY! …EWWWWW

 History is the INTERPRETATION of EVIDENCE concerning past events!  Why do we care?  It helps us to better understand people and societies  It helps us to understand why things change and why we have become what we are today  It helps us to be more informed about the world around us WHAT IS HISTORY?

The time period before humans knew how to record WHAT IS PRE-HISTORY?

 There is no way to create a complete picture of past civilizations. History is based on “limited evidence.”  Anthropologists and archeologists use artifacts, remains, and other cultural (culture: a way of life for a group of people) evidence to make assumptions and hypotheses. HOW DO SCIENTISTS STUDY PAST HISTORY?

INDIANA JONES?

 Recorded history began about 5,000 years ago.  The period of time prior to that is called “pre- history” (yeah, we already learned that Mr. Sliwa….)  Our knowledge of Pre – History primarily relies on Art and Spoken Word or Word of Mouth  Word of Mouth? Word of Mouth?  Why is oral history not as accurate as written history?  Telephone time! MORE ABOUT PRE-HISTORY

 There are two types of ways in which archeologists, anthropologists, and historians can review and study history.  PRIMARY sources: Original documentation of a person or event.  SECONDARY sources: Later or supplemental documentation of a person or event PRIMARY VS. SECONDARY SOURCES

PRIMARY VS. SECONDARY Driver’s License Declaration of Independence Textbook AutobiographyBiographyWikipedia

EARLY MAN “Early” man…get it? Because there is an alarm clock….No? Ok, ok…yeah, more like this guy…

 The earliest form of modern day man was believed to have originated in Africa.  Just a side note, Africa is a CONTINENT….NOT…a country!  Hominids, people, are defined by their ability to manipulate and create Technology! EARLY MAN

 Paleolithic Era:  2 million B.C. to about 10,000 B.C.  Paleo = OLD. Lithic = Stone.  Paleolithic people were NOMADS (wandered place to place in search for food) and were “Hunters” and “Gatherers.” THE STONE AGE

 Early humans made tools out of stone, bones, or wood.  They also created fire for cooking and made clothes out of animal skins.  Paleolithic people also practiced primitive religion. We know this by the great care that they took when burying their dead. PALEOLITHIC PEOPLE

 When pre-history and the Paleolithic age end, the Neolithic age begins!  Neo = NEW  FARMING was created and eliminated the need for people to be nomadic. Why?  People also learned to DOMESTICATE animals. Why do you think this was important? NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION!

 Agriculture changed the world as it was.  How you may ask?  Meet YouTube Guy! (you will see him a lot this semester) Meet YouTube Guy! (you will see him a lot this semester) AGRICULTURE CHANGES EVERYTHING!

 Slowly, these small farming villages grew into entire CIVILIZATIONS!  Early civilizations were ALWAYS settled near a major river. When rivers flood, it carries silt across the valley to renew the soil for farming.  These conditions allowed farmers to grow SURPLUS FOOD (extra or more food than what is needed) which could sustain the area for a much longer time as the food could be stored throughout the year. BEGINNINGS OF CIVILIZATION

- adequate food supply - organized gov’t - complex religions - job specializations - Most important is a surplus of agriculture (food) Without these elements there is no civilization! ELEMENTS OF A CIVILIZATION - arts and architecture - social classes - growth of cities - writing system

 Cities would then grow into city-states  City-states then formed EMPIRES! EXPANSION ….ummmm
