Advanced Placement Statistics and Calculus BC Curriculum Council Presentation, November 23, 2010

High School students ready for college level curriculum Well-defined course syllabus Opportunity to take the course AP exam for college credit

Current HS math course pathways are finite Current practice is providing access to college and online courses for students Number of students needing more course opportunities is increasing (L: Gr 7 Alg – 27 students; Acc Geom – 29 students. W: Gr 7 Alg – 17 students.) Rigor - AP Study; benefits of exposure to rigor More than 90 percent of four-year colleges in the United States and colleges in more than 60 other countries give students credit, advanced placement or both on the basis of AP Exam scores.

 LRP: Increase AP course offerings  Goal 3: The ACT composite score in each content area tested will continually increase from 23.8 to 26 and continually increase test participation to 100%.  Goal 4: The percentage of students enrolled in AP courses will continue to increase each year with all students completing an AP or AP level course prior to graduation.

 Clear standards and guidelines are determined by College Board audit  Alignment is with college level rigor  Course syllabus must be approved by the College Board

AP Statistics: One year, one credit; Prerequisite: Pre-calculus or Algebra II completion with teacher conferencing This course is designed to prepare students to be successful on the College Board Advanced Placement Statistics exam. It will introduce students to the major concepts and tools covered under the following four topics:  Exploring Data: Describing patterns & departures from patterns (20%–30%)  Sampling and Experimentation: Planning & conducting a study (10%–15%)  Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation (20%–30%)  Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses (30%–40%)

Advanced Placement Calculus BC: One year, one credit; Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accelerated Pre-Calculus and teacher conferencing This course is a rigorous extension of analytic geometry previously studied in Accelerated Pre-Calculus. It also includes an in-depth study of differential and integral calculus, and differential equations in both cartesian and non-cartesian forms. In addition, the course includes the study of indeterminate forms, as well as sequences and series. (A graphing calculator from the TI-83 or TI-84 family will be needed for this class.)

 MS Math Accelerated Students  Students previously doing Youth Options  Students considering career pathways  Statistics: Social sciences, sciences, math, medicine, pharmacology  Calculus BC: Science and engineering, math, computers, medicine, pharmacology  Highly motivated, academic achievers

Math Department:  Statistics vs. AP Statistics ▪ Unknown - Same/Different student populations  Calculus AB vs. Calculus BC ▪ Same students/differentiated pathway  Increased AP enrollment  Always competing interests
