Lesson Objectives: People in Society You will review the idea that our lives are greatly influenced by the societies in which we live.

People in Society Each society in the world contains: *Language *Social relationships *Institutions *Material goods: food, clothing, buildings, tools, and machines *Cultures *Ethnicity *Religious beliefs *Customs: music, dress, food, traditions, holidays Factors that have increased interaction among cultures: *Advancements in transportation *Advancements in communication *Wars *Natural disasters *Trade

Cultural Diffusion: The spread of different cultural beliefs and practices throughout the world. Elements of Culture: The following things can influence our decisions and values. *Religious beliefs *Economic status *Education *Work experience *Political beliefs *History

Discrimination: Over time, certain cultural groups in American have been oppressed and treated unfairly. These groups have protested and taken action to bring out equality in our nation. *African-Americans *Women *Native-Americans *Latino-Americans *Asian-Americans Discrimination often has negative effects: *Slavery *Taking land from others (Native Americans) *Eradication of cultures (Imperialism) *Genocide- systematic killing of large numbers of people on the basis of ethnicity, religion, political beliefs, or social status.

Vocabulary *Globalization- The act, process, or policy of making something worldwide in scope. *Cooperation- The spread of cultural practices and ideas through alliances and partnerships. *Collective Security- Taking advantage of the advancements in transportation to commit illegal acts (drug trafficking, weapons, terrorists).
