Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Improver Search engines can help you find almost any sort of information on the internet. With so many sites to choose from, how can you trust the information you find? How can you use web information in the right way?

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Improver Start with what you have, and think about what you want to find. Find key words and phrases in the information you already have. Write down key words and phrases that describe what you need to find. Use these in your searches.

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Improver Enter your search terms into more than one search engine. Explore as many results as you can. Don't just use the first one or two.

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Improver Think about who might have the information you want. If you know the name of a person or organisation, search for these as well. Explore their website to see if you can find what you need. Many sites have their own search function.

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Improver What sort of information do you want to find? Many search engines let you search for images, videos, news stories and more. Click on the search results menu to ‘filter’ your results so that you just see one type of information (e.g. images). For better results, search for exactly what you want.

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Improver Check that the information you find is up to date and reliable: The web page may show the date when it was last updated. Try and find another source for information. If you find an important fact, enter it into a search engine and try to find other pages that confirm that it’s correct.

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Improver Be honest when you use information from the internet. Write a note under any image or text that you use, showing the website it came from and the date. Don't paste lots of text into your work and pretend it’s your own. It’s easy for someone to enter it into a search engine and prove that you copied it!

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Advanced If you are using content from a web page, explore the rest of the site. Who has produced this website? What are their qualifications? Why have they produced the site? What is their point of view or objective?

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Advanced Think about how this affects your own work. If you are trying to argue the same point of view, can this help you? If the site has a different point of view, can this help you improve your own ideas? If you need to present a balanced point of view, how can you search for a different viewpoint?

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Advanced Check the facts on any web page. Follow any links to references or sources. These may be in the text or at the bottom of the page.

Copyright ©: SAMSUNG & Samsung Hope for Youth. All rights reserved Tutorials The internet: Finding information Advanced Look for information that won’t show up in searches. This is the ‘invisible web’: Many websites don't allow search engines to find their content. You will need to search the site itself. Some content may be contained in objects like Flash animations. Databases often don't show up. Search for these specifically, such as ‘Europe road accident data’.
