3 Choose the right sources Not every website is a good source for research. Use these steps to pick reliable sources: 1. Check the web address. 2. Check the author and publisher. 3. Check the date. 4. Decide: Is the information fact or opinion? Have you already used one or more of these steps? Which ones? 4 Check the web address Search engine results will include a web address, or URL. What do you think the web address can tell you about the reliability of the site? When you go to a specific website, the URL will show up in the address box at the top of the browser..com?.org?.edu? 5 Be careful if the site redirects you Does the new address look similar to the old one? What should you do if the new site asks you for your email address and phone number? Is the content what you were expecting? 6 Check the author and publisher Questions to ask yourself: – What company, organization, or person put this site together? – Who wrote the information I’m reading? – How do I know it is a trustworthy source on this topic? – Is there a way to contact the author? What do you think an unreliable site might look like? 7 What about Wikipedia? A wiki is a website that allows many different people to write or edit the content. You are probably most familiar with Wikipedia, which is an online encyclopedia that almost anyone can edit. If you were doing research for a school paper, would you trust a Wikipedia entry written by one of these people? Why or why not? 9 There are clues to figure out if an author is legitimate Questions to ask yourself: – What are the author’s credentials? – Can the author be contacted? – Does the author cite sources? – If I do a search on this author, what do I discover? If a person doesn’t have a degree or experience with a topic, does that matter? Why or why not?
