PROJECT ASSIGNMENT Create a networked orientation sensor for a Freescale wind turbine. Has to give direction Has to deliver this data to Thread system Must be weather resistant Cannot interfere with other internal components of turbine itself 1 Degree Resolution Remote design to run off of a 3V coin cell battery for a year

BRAINSTORMING 1) A magnetometer attached to the fin to measure direction relative of North. 2) Use a quadrature optical encoder on the shaft to determine change in direction refined by a gyroscope 3) Gray code optical encoder refined by a gyroscope for absolute location 4) Color sensor encoder for precise absolute location

ADAFRUIT RGB COLOR SENSOR Gives digital return of red, green, blue (RGB), and clear light sensing values. An IR blocking filter, integrated on-chip and localized to the color sensing photodiodes minimizes the IR spectral component of the incoming light and allows color measurements to be made accurately.

APPLICATION OF COLOR WHEEL WITH COLOR SENSOR Issues: Need to design and our own encoder disk Need to design and fab a cuff to attach a standard PVC to the non-standard diameter of the base

PROGRESS/DEMO The color sensor is detecting color using the Freedom board and giving a digital return. A cross-section has been created to view how the color wheel and PVC sleeve will be mounted to the shaft

MANUFACTURABLE AND ECONOMIC Creating a fitting so standard PVC can be used. Making the encoder disk reasonably thin and out of thermal polymer All materials and devices are cheaply manufactured or widely available Power all devices from the generator with batteries for back-up
