  Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter

  Molecules are particles that are made up of two or more atoms of the same or different elements. Molecules

  The three typical forms of matter are: solids, liquids, and gases; the states of water are: ice (solid), liquid water, and vapor (steam) States of Matter

  Solids- state of matter with a definite shape and volume  Liquids- state of matter with a definite volume but no definite shape; Liquids take the shape of their container!  Gases- state of matter with no definite volume or shape; examples: water vapor; steam  Evaporate : the changing of a liquid to a gas Defining the States of Matter: Solids, Liquids, and Gases

 States of water can change when a change of temperature is involved. Increase the Temperature--- solid to a liquid & liquid to a gas Decrease the Temperature---- gas to a liquid & liquid to a solid

 Matter Can Undergo Two Different Types of Changes Physical ChangeChemical Change

  -the shape or form of a substance becomes different, but the properties of the substance stays the same; it’s a change in the size, shape, or state of matter that does NOT CREATE A NEW KIND OF MATTER;  -Example- changing water into ice, or ice melting into water, water boiling into a vapor Physical Change

  -a change in matter that produces new kinds of matter with different properties; atoms are arranged into new molecules  -Examples- Burning, rusting, explosions, acid Chemical Change

  A chemical reaction happens when two or molecules interact and something happens or changes. Chemical Reaction

 Clues That a Chemical Change Has Taken Place :  Change in : color, temperature, odor  Bubbles or Fizzing  Burning or Rusting

  Measurement is finding a number that shows the size or amount of something.  There are two main “Systems of Measurement”: Metric and US Standard. Measurement

  The metric system is a system measurement that uses multiples of 10.  Length: 1 cm= 10 mm, 1 m= 100 cm, 1 km= 1,000 m  Volume: 1 L= 1,000 mL  Mass: 1 kg = 1,000 g Metric System
