Introduction to heidi: The higher education information database for institutions Nicola Phelps heidi Service Manager

What is heidi? Web-based management information tool Ability to create reports and charts from a broad range of data about HE Subscription service, available to HEI's and approved stakeholders heidi is run by HESA as a self-funding, not-for- profit service

Background to heidi Developed in partnership with The University of Leeds, with funding from LGM fund and funding councils Aimed to reduce burden on HEI’s by providing access to a wide variety of HE data in one place System went live during April % of HEI's currently subscribe

Benefits Save time and resource by accessing a wide range of HE data in one place Benchmark the performance of your institution against others A living system, continually being updated with latest data and regular system improvements Easy sharing of reports within your organisation – create reports once, use many times

What HESA data is included? Student Staff Destination of leavers Finance Key Financial Indicators HE-BCI Parts A and B Student Staff Ratios Performance Indicators HEMS (higher education management statistics) … most data covering period 2001/02 to 2009/10

What other HE data is included? UCAS (including CUKAS, GTTR and NMAS) Estate Management Statistics National Student Survey Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) Funders Forum Metrics ("Sustainability Metrics") SCONUL Library Management Statistics

heidi – the system

heidi home page Easy navigation Quick access to recently viewed reports Data release schedule

Manage reports screen Users can create reports, or view reports created by HESA or users at their organisation

Reporting tools in heidi

Designing a report Easy data selection using the Data explorer Select a comparator group of institutions Ability to add row aggregates

Viewing a report Highlight a single institution Column aggregates (e.g. sum, median, percentages)

Viewing a report Column aggregates for your chosen report group

Notes and definitions Accompanying data definitions and notes

Charting in heidi

Charts Ability to create 7 different chart types;  Column  Row  Pie  Line  Pattern  Scatter  Distribution Charts may be downloaded to powerpoint

Pattern chart: 2009/10 % surplus/(deficit) to total income Display data for a chosen comparator group Compare a single institution (red) against a comparator group (blue) and the sector (grey) Displays the median, upper and lower deciles for the sector

Pattern chart: 2009/10 % first degree qualifiers with a specific learning difficulty

Scatter chart: 2009/10 Academic staff FTE by student FTE Compare two columns of data for a chosen group of institutions Ability to highlight a single institution

Distribution chart: Research grants & contacts income for York St John University compared to the GuildHE institutions Compare a time series of data for a chosen institution Display the median, upper and lower quartile for the chosen comparator group

heidi - the future New data sources Enhancing heidi as a benchmarking tool:  Already a simple benchmarking tool  Develop enhanced data visualisations  Introduce statistical benchmarking functionality  Develop training for heidi benchmarking

More information on heidi Stay on at end of session for a demo or to find out if your institution is subscribed Information site: heidi system: heidi.hesa.ac.uk To undertake a free trial, or find out if your organisation subscribes:
