1 Introduction to OBIEE: Learning to Access, Navigate, and Find Data in the SWIFT Data Warehouse Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview This course, Introduction to OBIEE, provides a high-level overview of the basic elements and navigation in OBIEE, the SWIFT Data Warehouse query and reporting tool. OBIEE (Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition) provides State of Minnesota agencies the ability to retrieve and present financial and human resources data from the SWIFT Data Warehouse in a variety of formats including queries, reports and dashboards. OBIEE delivers a user-friendly business intelligence platform that makes it simple to access data, whether the user is running pre- built queries and reports or creating them from the ground up. This course is recorded as a PowerPoint presentation, allowing you to review it at your own pace. Click your mouse or use your keyboard arrow keys to advance slides. Red boxes shown in demonstrations are intended to simulate mouse clicks in OBIEE. NOTE: Many of the screenshots in this course were recorded in a demonstration environment. Data displayed in the examples provided does not reflect actual State of Minnesota data.

2 Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview OBIEE provides access to a wide range of data from the SWIFT Data Warehouse. Let’s take a look at what types of data are available, and what happens behind the scenes to make the data available to users through OBIEE. In this lesson, we’ll discuss how data flows from the source systems to the SWIFT Data Warehouse in order to make information available to state agencies using the OBIEE query and reporting tool. This lesson will introduce: The types of data that are available in the SWIFT Data Warehouse How the data flows from the source systems through the SWIFT Data Warehouse and OBIEE to the end user.

3 Source Systems Information in the SWIFT Data Warehouse originates from two source systems: SWIFT and SEMA4. Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

4 SWIFT Source Systems Data from SWIFT includes information from the SWIFT financial and procurement modules. Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

5 SWIFT SEMA4 Source Systems Data from SEMA4 includes Human Resources and Payroll information. Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

6 SWIFT SEMA4 Source Systems SWIFT Data Warehouse Data from SWIFT and SEMA4 is loaded to the SWIFT Data Warehouse in regularly scheduled batches. The timing and frequency of the data loads varies from nightly to biweekly, depending on the type of data. Several processes occur behind the scenes to make that data ready for users to access via OBIEE. Let’s take a look at those processes. Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

7 SWIFT SEMA4 Source Systems SWIFT Data Warehouse The data received from the source systems comprises thousands of data tables. That raw data is very unorganized, and needs to be further refined in order to make it available to users. Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

8 SWIFT SEMA4 Source Systems SWIFT Data Warehouse Many processes take place to organize and transform the data in the warehouse. Logical relationships between tables are built, making it easy to retrieve the data through OBIEE. GREAT NEWS! This means that users do not need to concern themselves with the work of linking tables to get the right data; that work is all done behind the scenes. Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

9 SWIFT SEMA4 Source Systems SWIFT Data Warehouse OBIEE Once the data is organized, it becomes accessible to users via OBIEE. Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

10 SWIFT SEMA4 Source Systems SWIFT Data Warehouse OBIEE Subject Area OBIEE makes the data available through individual subject areas. Think of subject areas as individual libraries of related information. Each query a user creates in OBIEE is based on a specific subject area. Examples of OBIEE subject areas are : FMS - General Ledger – Journal Entries (includes SWIFT Financial data) HCM – Payroll - Labor Distribution (includes SEMA4 Payroll data) Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

11 SWIFT SEMA4 Source Systems SWIFT Data Warehouse OBIEE Subject Area End users access OBIEE (and therefore the SWIFT Data Warehouse) through the SWIFT Administrative Portal. SWIFT Admin Portal Report Developers & Consumers Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

12 OBIEE Subject Area SWIFT Admin Portal Report Developers & Consumers State agency users use OBIEE to access data in the SWIFT Data Warehouse – by viewing or building queries or reports (referred to as analyses) based on an OBIEE subject area. OBIEE can provide the results in a variety of ways: Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

13 OBIEE Subject Area SWIFT Admin Portal Report Developers & Consumers In a query/report Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

14 OBIEE Subject Area SWIFT Admin Portal Report Developers & Consumers Or on a dashboard - a customized collection of objects on a page including reports, links and alerts Lesson 1: SWIFT Data Warehouse Overview

15 Terminology Review

16 Terminology Review Analysis: Dashboard: OBIEE: Subject Area: A query against the SWIFT Data Warehouse that provides answers to business questions. Often referred to generically as a report or query. A customized grouping of information including items like reports, links, and alerts that summarize a collection of data. OBIEE dashboards are presented as tabbed sheets, allowing you to develop and present several dashboards that are accessible from one place. An acronym for Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition – The query and reporting tool that is used to gather, analyze, and present data in the SWIFT Data Warehouse. OBIEE gives users the ability to query and present data in various formats including tables, graphs, dashboards, etc. An area within OBIEE that contains related columns (fields) from tables in the SWIFT Data Warehouse. Think of subject areas as individual libraries of related information. Each analysis created in OBIEE is based on a specific subject area.
