The International Tennis Federation History Founded in 1913 as International Lawn Tennis Association 12 member nations attended the first meeting deciding the 15 nations that would became the inaugural members, undersigning the minutes and accepting the voting status: Australasia (Australia and New Zealand), Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland Present The ITF has 210 member nations 145 Full members / 65 Associate members Six regional associations USA and Canada are the only two nations not part of a Regional Association

Mission Statement The Mission of the International Tennis Federation is to foster the growth and development of the sport of Tennis worldwide on a professional, non-professional and grass roots basis together with 210 member nations

It is now the world’s largest annual international team competition in sport, with 123 nations entered in 2012 The 2012 final will be the 100th final in Davis Cup USA has won the title 32 times Fed Cup was launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ITF. It is now the world’s largest annual international team competition in women’s sport, with 90 nations entered in 2012 2013 marks the 50th year of Fed Cup USA has won the title 17 times

Olympic Tennis Event History Tennis was one of the original nine Olympic sports at the first Modern Olympiad held in Athens in 1896. Only Men’s Singles and Doubles was played and Ireland’s John Boland became the first Olympic tennis champion winning Gold in both events In 1900 in Paris, Women’s tennis was introduced and Great Britain's Charlotte Cooper become the first woman ever to win an Olympic medal in any sport Mixed doubles was also played but not Women’s Doubles which was not introduced until 1920 In 1924 at the Paris Games the USA took all 5 Gold medals on offer – Men’s Singles & Doubles, Women’s Singles & Doubles and Mixed Doubles Tennis left the Olympic movement following the 1924 Games and only returned at the 1984 Los Angeles Games as a demonstration sport becoming a full sport again at the 1988 Games in Seoul.
