Thinking Like and Engineer Inventions and Innovations

Newton’s Three Laws of Motion ► What do you think the Three Laws of Motion are? ► Who is Sir Isaac Newton?

Sir Isaac Newton ► Cambridge College, in Great Britain, graduate who was very interested in mathematics, gravity, and optics. ► His discovery of the three laws of motion allowed for mechanical engineers to create new inventions during the Industrial Revolution in the 1600’s. ► How will you use his three laws of motion?

First Law of Motion ► The Law of Inertia- without a force, like a push or a pull, an object will not move or stop moving. ► All matter- a rock, a house, even you have inertia. ► Inertia is the resistance an object has to the change of motion. Do you think a large rock or a piece of paper has more inertia?

What are examples of force? V41q-M

Forces ► A push ► Pull ► Friction ► Gravity ► Electrical Forces ► Magnets ► Wind May the Force be with you……..

Inertia Coin Magic ► What do you think will happen to the coins? ► What actually happened to the coins?

First Law Continued….. How might an engineer or inventor use this law?

Second Law of Motion ► F=MA The greater the force on an object, the greater the change of motion. The greater the mass of an object, the greater force needed to change it’s motion. ► Can you hit a baseball further than a two year old? Why? ► Is it harder to push a chair with or with someone in the chair? ►

Third Law of Motion ► For every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction. ► When you throw two balls at each other, what happens to the balls? ► What happens when you run into a wall? ► u614 u614 u614

Eraser-Paper Race ► Do you think the paper or eraser has more inertia? ► With a gentle flick, which one will travel further? ► Which item has more mass? ► Do you think mass and inertia have a relationship?

Balloon Experiment ► Predict what will happen if I threw two balloons at each other? ► Using the third law explain how you knew what was going to happen.

Engineer and Inventors? How might an engineer or inventor use the second and third laws?

Remember…. Everyone is an engineer and an inventor!

Vocabulary Review ► ► Inertia: is the resistance of any physical object to a change in its state of motion or rest, or the tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion ► ► Motion: the act of changing location from one place to another ► ► Force: A push or pull exerted on an object

Vocabulary Continued ► ► Acceleration: the rate of change in speed… getting onto the highway has more acceleration than turning into a neighborhood. ► ► Friction: Friction is resistance to a moving object. Friction is caused by one surface touching another. Ask the student if it would be easier to roller skate on a smooth roller skating rink, or a gravel road. Why?

Next Steps! ► You will be moving on to your engineering project of a Bridge. All materials will be provided. ► With the bridge, you must add the following vocab: aesthetics, gravity, compression, scientific process, construction, mass, conditions, design and function. Please put these in your notebook, index cards or on the flashcard website.(Scholastic.com) ► Bridges will begin next week!
