NEWTON’S 1 ST LAW OF MOTION Newton’s First Law of Motion An object at rest will remain at rest unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force. An object moving at a constant velocity will continue moving at a constant velocity unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.
DEMONSTRATION… Let’s see if Newton was right… So what happened? How does this apply to Newton’s First Law of Motion?
YOUR TURN… Take the cup and place the index card on top of it. Place a penny on top of the cup. Using your finger, flick the index card (but do not hit the cup). See what happens. (try it a couple of times)
STUFF TO KNOW… Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion. Newton’s first law is also known as: “The Law of Inertia”
STUFF TO KNOW… Inertia depends on mass. Some objects have more inertia than others.
QUESTIONS… What is Newton’s First Law of Motion? 1) Every action has an opposite and equal reaction. 2) What goes up must come down. 3) An object at rest will remain at rest, as well as an object in motion will remain in motion until an unbalanced force is applied to the object. 4) Force = Mass x Acceleration
