Nonfiction: “claim” to be true, but often incorporate personal perspective Subgenres: – Personal histories (autobios & biographies) – Personal essays – Reports Can have same elements as fiction (plot, conflict, characters, etc)

Subjective vs. Objective: Purpose is to express opinions, feelings, point of view Personal Private snapshot Purpose is to inform Unbiased (facts) “big picture”

The (Still) Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe Count off by 9. Read your assigned possible cause of Poe’s death. In the corresponding box on p.13, – Title the cause of death – Summarize what you read in a sentence or a couple bullets – Be prepared to share what you learned with the class.

Possible Causes of Poe’s death: 1.Beating: -drunk, robbed, beaten, and left for death -brain fever followed beating 2.Cooping: -victim is kidnapped, drugged, disguised, and forced to vote many times for particular people

Possible Causes of Poe’s death: 3. Alcohol: -had history of trouble with alcohol 4. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: -indoor lighting was toxic with coal gas 5. Heavy Metal Poisoning: -mercury poisoning? (causes hallucinations)

Possible Causes of Poe’s death: 6. Rabies: -delirium, hallucinations, shallow breathing, & rapid pulse rate (all symptoms of rabies) -BUT no bite mark or “fear of water” (also symptoms of rabies) 7. Brain Tumor: -found mass in Poe’s dead skull (could be tumor)

Possible Causes of Poe’s death: 8. Flu: -wife & doc both found symptoms of flu (like hallucinations) 9: Murder: -fiancee’s brothers could have killed him because they didn’t want him to marry their sister
