MOUNT PLEASANT PRIMARY SCHOOL SPRING 2 YEAR 6 MATHS This half term the focus will be on revising and consolidating strategies and methods in order to prepare the children for upcoming end of Key Stage 2 tests. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY – Making sure they learn their times tables up to 12 x 12, completing homework on time and using their revision guides daily. Encourage children to carry out tasks on mymaths.co.uk SCIENCE. This half term’s topic is Electricity. We will be thinking about how to stay safe when using electricity and revising children’s previous learning about circuits and electric components. We will also be constructing circuit diagrams, discussing ways of scientifically measuring the brightness of a bulb and planning an enquiry to find out how the number & voltage of the cells in a simple circuit affect the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers or the speed of motors. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY – Discussing safe ways of using electricity and ways to cut down on power consumption in the home. ENGLISH This half term the focus for English is Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’. The children will be interpreting some Shakespearian language as well as writing letters and diaries in character. They will have the opportunity to perform parts of the play and read a range of modern interpretations. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY – Introducing them to a range of Shakespeare plays – there are many modern versions, including comics, which the children will be able to understand and enjoy. HISTORY In History the children will be studying the life and work of the 16 th Century Play writer- William Shakespeare. They will research his family life and career and write his biography. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY – Looking at Shakespeare’s work (in the form plays, film and books) and discussing the context they are set in and the insight they give to 16 th Century Britain. MUSIC This half term in music we are learning about synthesised music through the ages. We are learning about Robert Moog and are researching and producing a booklet focussing on his life and work and his inventions. We are also learning new songs and identifying pitch in a variety of music. We will be singing solo and in harmony in our classrooms. ICT The children will continue learning how to programme using Scratch. They will be designing their own games including sprites, backgrounds, scoring and timers. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY – Using the computer to help them find out more about programming and applying it to their work in school ART AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY The children will be making Ferris Wheels. They will design the theme of their ride and build the model from wood and card. They will need to cooperate in a group to choose a theme and build the ride, sharing tasks equally between themselves. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY – Researching the history of Ferris wheels – find out who invented them and where the first Ferris wheel was built. PSHCE Our theme is ‘Being Brilliant’. The children will be introduced to new words which link to positive personal attributes such as, independent, critical thinking, love of learning.
