10.2: Military Conflict

 What is the Arab Spring?  What were the events, causes, locations, and resolutions of the Arab Spring?  How did technology play a role in the Arab Spring?  What are the current events of the Arab Spring revolutions?

 Brief History of the Middle East  As you watch the video, notice the occupying groups, and note the dates and independence of each country. What suprises you about these dates?  Imperial History of the Middle East  history.html history.html  The question in this century is “Who will control these countries now?”

 Perspectives of the Arab Spring:  The Arab Spring: The Year Of Revolution  NPR Staff: The Arab Spring: A Year of Revolution  -arab-spring-a-year-of-revolution -arab-spring-a-year-of-revolution  What should be the US reaction to the new governments?  How do you think women’s rights might be affected?

 Arab Spring Countries and the Revolutions  6 groups =  Egypt, Libya, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen  Each group will research the assigned country in relation to the Arab Spring events as well as current events and create a 5 minute Prezi or Power Point presentation. Us the Presentation Organizer to outline the presentation points on the next slide:

 The location of the country and major cities  The ethnicities in the country  Past and/or present governments  Past and present leaders of the country  Past and current uprisings in the country including key events  Reasons for the uprisings including demands and concerns  Key events leading to the uprisings  Leaders of the uprisings  Locations of uprisings  The nature of the uprisings (violent/peaceful)  Resolution of the revolution, if any  Other pertinent information

 ***In addition to addressing each of the points above, students need to create a timeline of the Arab Spring events for their country. The timeline can be presented separately in their presentation.  In this jigsaw activity, each student’s part of the activity is important to the full understanding of the various viewpoints on the effects of the use of technology and the Arab Spring. The only access any group member has to the information gained by his/her fellow group members is by listening to the report of those students. In this activity, students will read five articles about the use of technology during the Arab Spring and its effects on the revolutionary movements
