9. Background to Current Protests…  Current conflicts: -Roots began with collapse of Ottoman Empire around WWI (1914-1918). -British and French wanted control of the region for their colonies.

11. Protect the Oil!  During WWI, British Navy switches from coal to oil- burning ships…where’s the oil again?

12. Post WWI Independence  Britain granted independence to a number of her colonies in the 1920’s and 1930’s.  But, with a great demand for oil, how could Britain make sure these new countries listened?

13. British answer?  Set-up governments who have: 1) Leaders willing to sell oil. 2) Leaders who are in complete control of their people (authoritarian rule).
