12 Ways to Lower Your Risk for Cancer By the Gateway School General Science Classes

A. Eat LOTS of Fruits and Vegetables Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage are especially good for you.

● Eat whole grains and beans. ● Green and dark yellow vegetables reduce your risk of colon and stomach cancers.

B. Make Green Vegetables Part of Every Meal Snack on raw vegetables, especially these ones.

Especially eat cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and broccoli.

C. Eat a diet high in anti-oxidants like beta-carotene, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Vitamin E can be found in foods such as cooking oil, fish oil, nuts and seeds, multi-grain cereal, apricots, pumpkins, mustard and poutry.

D. Eat Red Foods Containing Lycopene.

Red fruits, such as strawberries, cherries, tomatoes, contain lycopene, which can help to prevent certain types of cancer.

Cherries Cherries have at least 17 anti- oxidant compounds in them. They have a lot of health benefits. They can help with many kinds of pain and they are helpful with arthritis relief, sleep enhancement, and cancer prevention.

Tomatoes Food and Drug Administration says that tomatoes a re very rich in beta carotene and anti oxidants which help prevent and fight cancer. There are many ways to use tomatoes and they can be included in all of your meals. Remember though that all red fruits are good for you so try to eat as much as possible.

#4 Avoid Sugars Too sugar can cause cancer cells to grow.

#5 Limit Saturated Fat (fats from animal products) ● Try to give up meat one day a week to reduce your intake of saturated fat which can lower your risk of some cancers. ● Also try to eat meatless meals more often. ● Choose low-fat or fat-free foods.

Hydrogenated fats are often found in margarine, cookies, snacks, fast foods and other pre-made food. #6 Eliminate hydrogenated or trans-fats.

#8 Drink Plenty of Water The "8 x 8 rule": Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day.

#9 Maintain a Healthy Weight and Stay Active ● Maintain a healthy weight for your height, age, gender, etc. ● Obesity is a risk factor for some cancers, so it is important to maintain a healthy weight for your height, age, gender, etc.

● Exercise regularly (about 30 minutes a day or most days of the week). ● An active lifestyle and a healthy diet can help lower your risk of certain types of cancer.

#10 Protect Yourself From The Sun Skin cancer is a common type of cancer which in many cases can be prevented by limiting exposure to the sun. Ways to protect yourself from the sun: Use sunscreen Wear sunglasses and hats Stay in the shade. Stay inside when the sun is the strongest.

#11 See Your Doctor Regularly and Get Screened. This can lead to early detection and increase your chance of successful treatment.

Get Your Immunizations Some cancers are associate with infections that can be prevented with vaccinations, such as Hepatitis B (which can increase your risk of liver cancer) and Human papillomavirus (which can cause cervical cancer). See your doctor and get recommended vaccinations.

#12 Reduce Your Stress Studies indicate that stress weakens the immune system and can promote the growth and spread of cancer.
