The American Red Cross was chartered by Congress in 1906  Responds to 70,000 disasters each year, from house fires to major natural and man-made disasters  Supplies almost half of the nation's blood supply  Trains almost 12 million people in vital lifesaving skills  Provides direct health services to nearly 3 million people  Transmits over a million emergency messages to members of the U.S. Armed forces and their families  Assists vulnerable people all over the world

American Red Cross Disaster Services When disaster strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health and mental health services, family linking welfare information to address basic human needs We provide 24/7 nationwide coverage The disaster relief operations are run principally by our volunteers

How Do We Do This 730 Chapters Integrated Disaster Preparedness and Response Plans Routine Disasters – Mutual Aid Major Disasters – Hurricane and Earthquake Common SOPs and Training Constant Activity Coordination with Federal, State and Local governments

Response Posture Shelter: 500,000 individuals for 30 days Cots, blankets, comfort kits Feeding: 1,000,000 meals within 72 hours for 30 days Bulk Distribution: Stock for 500,000 families Clean up kits, shovels, rakes, buckets, disinfectant, insect repellant, First Aid Kits, etc. Emergency Financial Assistance: 100,000 Families
