The Study of those relationships becomes most relevant when students are encouraged to make connections to their own lives as they explore and apply knowledge, skills, thinking, processes, and values.” - Social Studies 9 Curriculum

What is…Native Studies If Natives began living on the Plains 11,500 years ago, and Europeans first saw the Canadian Plains less than 300 years ago, this means that more than 97% of Plains history is Native history alone. Imagine a textbook with ten chapters, with each chapter portraying an equal part of that history. The first nine chapters would be devoted to Native history, as would more than 70% of the final chapter. Saskatchewan Education offers both a Native Studies 10 and a Native Studies 30 course. Native Studies 10 helps all students develop their knowledge, positive attitudes and cultural understanding about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. The unique history of Aboriginal peoples is part of our collective past and present reality. Thus, students benefit from a study of Aboriginal peoples because it gives them the opportunity to understand and respect one another. Native Studies 30: Canadian Studies is based on the premise that distinct perspectives are common, that diversity of truths exists, and that the motivation for most behaviors and attitudes may be traced to the worldviews and philosophical orientations of people. The purpose of this curriculum is not to attempt to articulate the precise Aboriginal values and beliefs which shape worldview and philosophy, but rather to stress their importance for gaining insight into the Aboriginal people of Canada.

Psychologists use stringent scientific methods and standardized scientific procedures to collect information and to analyze and interpret data. Psychology education involves students in learning about the science of psychology, as well as in conducting their own psychological research and exploring how their results can be applied to their lives and the world around them.

What is…Geography Geography consists of many areas, such as Physical Geography, Human Geography, Historical Geography and Economic/Political Geography. These areas cover everything from maps, political divisions and cartographic markings as well as how location, climate, geographical features, and vegetation are interrelated. Geography and many of the other subjects in the Social Sciences curriculum are very interrelated.

Students learn how lessons from the past can be used to make wise decisions for the present and the future. As well, by exploring various points of view and evaluating a variety of historical evidence, they practise achieving a balanced perspective. History, as a standalone subject is offered at the grade 10, 11, and 12 levels. Each grade level focuses on specific content and situates this content in various contexts, such as Canadian or World History.

What is…Law The Law 30 course is meant to assist students to become active, informed and productive citizens who know and understand their legal rights and responsibilities. Students will develop an understanding of the concept of rule of law and learn that the law reflects, and is shaped by, society’s values and attitudes. Law is made relevant to students through the study of current legal issues in Canada and the global community. The course examines Canada’s legal system, criminal and civil law, family law, employment and Labour law, contract and consumer law, environmental law and international law.
