MICE VIDEO Conference 17 th December 2003 Report on AFCSWG Safety Review -- Future Plan By Wing Lau -- Oxford

What next?.....the successful conclusion of the Safety Review allows us to enter into the second phase of the Conceptual Design and the initial phase for Detail Engineering & Design What remains in the second phase of the Conceptual Design? It consists of:- 1.Revising the existing design to take into account the comments and recommendations from the Safety Review 2.Defining the scope of supply and interface arrangements between the Absorber, Windows, Focus Coil, Coupling Coil and the Detector modules; 3.Continuation with the R&D programme and the HAZOP assessment; 4.Specification and arrangement of the control and monitoring instruments; The immediate future

Safety Review Engineering & Final Safety Review The Plan Note 1: Review of Safety issues, interface details etc System design & integration Integration review Instrumentation & control design / specification Set up Drawing system & change control QA procedures & manufacturing plans R & D Dimension & tolerance details Release for tender Release for manufacture Conceptual Design phase Detail design / engineering Manufacturing, inspection & expediting Acceptance & testing Yr 2004 Note 2 Final Operating Review See Note 1 Tender preparation Approval of Man. dwg Note 2: the above time scale is not linear

The next phase will emphasize on:- Agreement and clarity on interface details; The need to be more specific on design details, dimensions and manufacturing / installation tolerances The need to optimise design with cost effectiveness Setting out a QA procedure that is practical and meaningful; Setting up a drawing system that can “de-couple” local and interface details so as to avoid / minimise any “domino” effect when changes are made by the different package suppliers; Assuming that..... The existing design can be modified without any major change to accommodate the recommendation and remarks made by the Safety Review committee The R&D on window attachment will come to a satisfactory conclusion We should aim to have an Engineering Review, which is also our Final Safety Review, before manufacturing commences Our Focus

Future Absorber Focus Coil Module work group will include representative from each of these areas: Absorber; Windows; Coupling Coil module; Detector module; Instrumentation & Control; Hydrogen system and safety; Focus Coil module This work group will place strong focus on engineering details and therefore it is important that it receives advices from physicist members (Zisman & Cumming) to make sure that no physics requirements are being compromised. Where necessary, additional physicists will be co-opted into this work group. We shall also ask members from System Integration (Yuri and Ed) be co-opted into this work group. The group format

This group will report to the MICE Technical Board through Mike Zisman
