Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space.

 How It Looks (Shiny,Dull, Color, etc.)  How It Feels (Hard, Soft, Rough, Smooth, etc.)  How It Smells (Sweet, Sharp, Terrible, No Smell, etc.)  How It Sounds (Loud, Soft, Echo, No Sound, etc.)  What It Does (Bounce, Stretch, Tear, Break, Magnetism etc.)

There are three states of matter:  Solid  Liquid  Gas

 They have a definite shape and size.  They take up a definite amount of space.

They do not have a definite shape, but takes up a definite amount of space. They take the shape of the container they are in.

They take the shape of the container. It expands to fill whatever space is available in the container.

Ice Water Vapor

It is the measure of the amount of matter in an object. A pan balance can compare the mass of two objects.

You measure it in : milligrams mg grams g kilograms kg

 It is the amount of space that matter takes up.  It is measured in cubic centimeters and cubic meters.

You can use a graduated cylinder. It measures the volume in milliliters (mL) or liters (L).

1. Place water in a graduated cylinder and record its height. 2. Put the ball in the cylinder and record the height of the water. 3. Subtract the first measurement from the second. That is the volume of the ball! Remember : 1 mL = 1cubic cemtimeter

It is the amount of mass in a certain volume of matter. The density of an object determines if it floats or sinks.

It is a combination of two or more substances that can be separated.

It is when one or more substances are dissolved in another substance. The solute is the substance that is dissolved. The solvent is the substance that dissolves the other substance.

It is the ability of one substance to dissolve in another. The temperature of the solvent and the size of the solute pieces affect the solubility of a substance.

It is a change in the  size  shape  state of matter It does not change the kind of matter it is.

It makes a completely different kind of matter. Some examples are:  burning  rusting  cooking
