3. Definitons MASS- the amount of matter in a object VOLUME- the amount of space the object takes up DENSITY- how much matter (mass) is found in a certain volume

4. Properties of Matter The properties of matter can be observed using the 5 senses. The properties can be used to describe the matter.

5. Measuring Matter Objects have properties and can be measured using standard metric unit. Length measured in meters and centimeters Volume measured in cubic meter or liters and milliliters. Temperature measured in degrees Celsius. Mass measured in grams, milligrams, and kilograms.

6. Physical Changes The physical properties of matter are changed during physical changes but the matter is not changed into a different state. For example: folding paper, breaking a window, chopping down a tree

7. Chemical Changes Matter that is produced by chemical changes is a different kind of matter than the kind of matter it is formed from. Its different properties may be different than the original matter. Example: rusting, burning, vinegar combined with baking soda, Mentos in soda.

8. Temperature Temperature can effect the state of matter of a substance: Melting point Boiling point Freezing point

9. Density DENSITY- how much matter (mass) is found in a certain volume Low density materials float in water High density materials sink

10. Solutions and Mixtures Mixtures are combinations of more than one substance combined that can be easily separated. Solutions are mixtures that are evenly mixed and cannot easily be separated.
