MCAN’S MISSION To increase college readiness, participation and completion in Michigan, particularly among low- income students, first-generation college students, and students of color.

MCAN’S VISION AND VALUES College is Postsecondary Education: MCAN uses the term “college” to refer to the attainment of valuable postsecondary credentials beyond high school, including professional/technical certificates and academic degrees. College is a Necessity: Postsecondary education is a prerequisite to success in a knowledge-based economy. Everyone must pursue and complete a postsecondary credential or degree beyond high school. College is for Everyone: The postsecondary education attainment rates among low-income students and students of color are significantly lower than those of other students. MCAN is committed to closing these gaps. College is a Public Good: Postsecondary educational opportunity and attainment are critical to a just and equitable society, strong economy, and healthy communities.

MCAN’S BIG GOAL Increase the percentage of Michigan residents with high-quality degrees or credentials to: 60% by the year 2025

Increase College Completion by lowering barriers that prevent students from getting to and through college Social Capital Academic Preparation College Knowledge – Navigating the Process Affordability MICHIGAN’S STRATEGY

STATEWIDE INITIATIVES Support and maintain key statewide initiatives in order to increase college access, particularly within Local College Access Networks. Its MI Life. Michigan College Application Week Michigan

KnowHow2Go Michigan Introducing:

BACKGROUND National public awareness campaign sponsored by the Lumina Foundation, the Ad Council, the American Council on Education, and other allies Designed to encourage low-income and first- generation students and their families to take the steps necessary to prepare for postsecondary education through: Media messages that inspire Ground networks that support Available at

4 STEPS 1. Be a Pain (Social Capital) 2. Push Yourself (Academic Preparation) 3. Find the Right Fit (Navigating the Process) 4. Put Your Hands on Some Cash (Affordability)

4 STEPS 2. Push Yourself (Academic Preparation) Take the tough classes!

4 STEPS 3. Find the Right Fit (Navigating the Process) Find out which school is the best match for you and your career goals

4 STEPS 4. Put Your Hands on Some Cash (Affordability)

Timeline May 2008 Second round of PSAs released focused on Step 2: Push Yourself Tough characters introduced: Algebra II, Foreign Languages & Biology PSAs expired

Timeline June 2010 Refine and validate communications strategy Third round of PSAs released in 2011 focused on Steps 3 & 4: Find the Right Fit and Put Your Hands on Some Cash You’ve Got What It Takes – shift from “there are steps?” to “I’m not sure it’s worth the push.” PSAs expired

Creative Concept You’re talented. You enjoy a challenge that forces you to stretch. Maybe everyone doesn’t understand your hobby or skill, but you don’t do it for them. You know college is something you want, but it’s not going to come easy. It will take hard work and determination, but it’s not like you haven’t learned to do hard things. You’ve Got What It Takes.

MEDIA MESSAGES TO INSPIRE PSAs urge young students to find someone who can help them get to college and directs students and their mentors to a website and other resources Third series of PSAs illustrate how the –vision it takes to paint and conceive a mural, –the determination it takes to reach level 70 of a video game, and –the hard work it takes to land a challenging skateboard trick can be used to help them get to college.

National Update What’s next for KH2Go? Lumina funding came to an end in Dec – Michigan was always a self-funded state. Round 3 PSAs expired until February 1, 2013 –No additional PSAs will be produced Website assets will continue to be available Print Collateral – art files will continue to be available to produce at your own cost –Sticker decals –Key tags –Mentor workbook –T-shirts –Posters

Integrating the 4 Steps Implementation Strategies:

It’s MI Life Introducing:

It’s MI Life 2004 study conducted by Your Child revealed a significant disconnect between parents and teachers study revealed Michigan parents felt education was important but not essential. –Almost half of all parents(46%) don’t agree that everybody should have a college education. –About one-third of all parents (34%) don’t agree that people with a college education are usually better-off.

It’s MI Life Focus groups of 10 th -12 th graders in Southeast Michigan. –Michigan’s high school students know college is important to their future. They just want help navigating the path to that future. –While 5 out of 6 students say they plan to attend college, only 2 out of 6 are really likely to go. –Students are in search of easily accessible, personalized and meaningful advice.

It’s MI Life It’s MI Life was launched in 2009 as an effort to engage students directly in planning for life after high school. –Web portal: is a social network tied to envisioning a good life in the future, emphasizing higher education attainment as essential to having a good life. Summer 2009: Pilot phase 2010: Hiatus 2011: MCAN approached 2012: Relaunch

It’s MI Life It’s MI Life was launched in 2009 as an effort to engage students directly in planning for life after high school. –Students, parents, teachers, college advisors, and mentors are invited and encouraged to join in this effort Site offers non-intimidating, peer- to-peer conversational entry point – with an emphasis on the voices of students themselves. Provides opportunities and resources for college and career planning Connects w/ KnowHow2Go and Michigan College Access Portal
