ISS --What We’re Up To Christine Collins Associate Director Office of International Students and Scholars

GROWTH Purdue’s international student population exploded this year with a growth rate of 45%. This fall, 1325 new international undergraduates enrolled at Purdue.

The Raw Numbers (Undergraduates) Between 2000 and 2004 fairly stable between 470 and 500 ‘05 we increased our targets and grew the numbers to the 600 range 08, we increased again. 09, increased targets again to accommodate for the decrease in domestic non-resident, grew the population to slightly more than 1000 Increased our targets again, based on previous year matriculation rates, but the matrics increased by 25% more than anticipated. So essentially about 400 more students committed to Purdue than were expected to based on historical reference.

College of Science (Undergraduates) Between 2000 and 2004 fairly stable between 470 and 500 ‘05 we increased our targets and grew the numbers to the 600 range 08, we increased again.

So, What Happened? We work closely with the Office of Enrollment Management to set target rates for matriculation. In 2009, US students began staying “home” for college, so our domestic non-resident applications were down. In order to bridge the gap, we increased our targets for international admits. At the same time, our international applicants starting increasing at an amazing rate.

And the Results… We increased our target admit rate based on historical matriculation rates. But this year, 30% more students committed to Purdue than the historic rates indicated.

So, what is Purdue’s cultural profile? Total Int’l Student Pop: 7,934 4544 Undergrad 3390 Graduate Total Number of New Int’l Students to Purdue (undergrad and grad): 1329 +752=  2081 Undergrads alone contribute $182Million annually to our local economy.   Top four countries by enrollment (Undergrad and Grad) China (2250) + 1022 = 3272 India (557) + 748 = 1305 South Korea (525) + 357 = 882 Malaysia (244) + 24 = 268 Taiwan a close fifth with (164) + 100 = 264 Total Number of Countries Represented: 127   Total Number of Purdue Students: 39,637 Percent of Int’l Students to total Purdue Student Population: overall 20% (14% of undergrads 38% of Grads) $181,760,000 182Mil to our local economy.
