Emily Lynn Grant Administrator Office of Sponsored Projects and Research Administration

 Funding faculty research and creative works  Emphasis on research and scholarship  Curriculum Development & Service learning projects are not eligible  Merit of the project is the primary deciding factor  7 awards will be made in FY $5k max per award  Proposals are reviewed by FASTRC

 Up to $5,000 for materials/ supplies, student workers, consultants, equipment & travel.  The grant does not provide funding for faculty compensation such as a stipend or release time.  Grant recipients are obligated to return to USI for at least one complete academic year of service. Failure to do so will result in the grant recipient repaying the award amount to USI.

 Follow formatting instructions (i.e. margins, font, word/character/page limits, etc.)  Label each section using the header provided (i.e. Background Information)  Write in clear, non-technical, jargon free language.  Grant proposals are persuasive in nature… so make your argument to be awarded funding!

1. Literature review: Required, even for creative works proposals.  Tip: Highlight references that are relevant to the proposed project. 2. Specific Goals & Objectives: Describe the scope of the project  Tip: make sure it is appropriate for the award period (1yr.)

3. Significance of Project: address how the project will impact faculty, students, the community, academic community, etc.  Tip: This is the “ So what?” section 4. Research methods & timeline: describe clearly how you will collect data/do the research.  Tip: Use a numbered or bulleted list for your timeline

5. Evaluation: describe how the success of the project will be evaluated and disseminated.

 Letter(s) of support/site approval from any organizations you will work with on the project  Short CV (2 page maximum – highlighting your experience related to this project)  Other related materials surveys, focus group manuals, etc. that will be used for the project

 Maximum award amount is $5k  Scope of the project should match the budget request.  Tip: Manipulating the budget will not increase your chances of funding. Ask for what you need.  Double check your numbers  Tip: Discrepancies between the narrative, budget & budget justification may suggest the project has not been well thought out.

 Grant software used for all internal and external grant submissions.  Log In instructions  Visit:usi.cayuse424.com (NOTE: do not put www. in the web address)usi.cayuse424.com  From log in page select “First time signing in and need a password”  Your username will be the same as your USI username  Create a password in to CAYUSE

 All applicants must submit an intent to apply to no later than Monday January 26, 2015  The intent to apply can be found at:  grants grants  OSPRA staff will create your proposal shell which triggers a notification to sent from CAYUSE to the PI.

 Senior /Key Persons: Automatically populated with your information no additional information is needed.  Other personnel: student wages only.  Travel: travel for data collection or dissemination.  Other Direct Costs: materials and supplies, publication costs, consultant services, durable equipment with a unit price less than $5k.

 Faculty salaries or release time  Curriculum development projects  Service learning projects  Capital Equipment (unit price >$5k)

 Provides details on budget items and the rationale for each item (i.e. why you need the it)  Include calculations for each item Example: 4days per diem x $32 per day=$128  Tip: Organize your budget justification in the same order as your budget so the documents can be compared easily.

 Navigate to the Proposal Summary section  Select documents  Upload the following documents as single.pdf files:  Project Description  Letters of Support  Short CV  Budget Justification  Other related materials

 Applicant's Qualifications  How relevant is the applicant’s academic background to conduct the project? If not, how thorough is the justification?  How well does the applicant demonstrate productivity (publications, performances, presentations, past and/or present efforts to procure external funding, etc.), experience, and/or potential to implement the project as defined?  Proposal Background  How well does the proposal describe the history of the concept for the project? TIP: Use review criteria to assess your proposal and determine if you have addressed all points

 Significance/Goals & Objectives  How well does the proposal show the significance of the project to the discipline and practice, the University, the community, and beyond?  How well does the proposed project fit the applicant’s scholarly goals? TIP: Use review criteria to assess your proposal and determine if you have addressed all points

 Research Methods  How well does the proposal demonstrate that the project can be completed with the available resources and in the time specified (feasibility)?  How clearly does the proposal describe a plan for development and implementation? Description should include specific details regarding the development of creative design, how data collection will be collected, and/or what types of statistical analysis will be used. TIP: Use review criteria to assess your proposal and determine if you have addressed all points

 Budget  How appropriate, accurate, and justified is the budget and use of resources?  How reasonable does the budget seem for both the effort and anticipated results described?  Can the project be completed with the funding requested?  Evaluation  How well are the expected outcomes described?  Outcomes must be measureable. How well does the proposal describe how expected outcomes will be measured?  Does the proposal describe the plans for disseminating the creative work or research results?
