JERICO KICK OFF MEETINGPARIS – Maison de la recherche - 24 & 25 May 2011

Partners: Deltares, UOM, NERC, Cefas, SYKE, CSIC, BL Objectives To develop a Jerico Community Hub and JERICO Datatool for engagement of diverse end-user groups To provide educational and information resources for identified user groups To provide training in topics related to Jerico

T6.1 Development of end-user products and services (Lead: CEFAS; Main Partners: BL, NERC) Objectives of this task: To develop the Jerico Community Hub (JCH) using web technologies To enhance the current web-based EMECO data fusion and visualisation tools to allow users to import data and export integrated data sets and information products via a new user interface developed for the general public and educational sectors.

T Design and Build of the JERICO Community Hub. encompass an OceanBoard (6.2), forums, information, news, data reports and other agreed outputs. It will also provide access to the Jerico datatool the site will be developed to its final release state and integrated with a content management system (CMS). Initial content for the website and the OceanBoard (WP6.3) will be developed and loaded into the website and approved prior to launch The Jerico datatool will provide these products and services on a pan European scale.JERICO data will be provided from WP's 3 and 4 via WP 5, which will devise a common data format for exporting JERICO data into the JERICO datatool for public outreach and education. – NO ! Deliverable: Web based Jerico Community Hub (JCH)

T Development of JERICO Datatool. Based on EMECO datatools, access via Jerico website Bring in data from other WP’s (3,4,)7, in common format (WP5 ) ? Deliverable: Development and implementation of suite of web-based interactive tools

JERICO OCEANBOARD WHAT: P roposed as the educational component of the JERICO information portal; an online educational and information resource WHO: targets a range of users across different age groups (including the younger generations), academic levels (including technology and engineering), spheres of the public service society (managers and decision makers), and the public in general to reach the wider interests and needs of a knowledge- based society. The JERICO OceanBoard will thus target all levels of society, especially those categories that can improve their performance through the specific use of coastal observations and dependent services and products.

JERICO OCEANBOARD M ain components: JERICO-PROF: (T ) for the higher level audience and professionals; targeting learning modules on operational oceanography, focussing on coastal observatories and applications, and dealing with elements to teach users on how to utilise derived tools to the benefit of their area of application. Deliverable: Design and launching of JERICO OceanBoard V0 (M6) JERICO-PUB (T ): for the general public to promote the case for coastal observatories and educate about the marine ecosystem; to raise awareness and interest on the use of services deriving from operational oceanography. Deliverable: (6.2.2) Upgrade of JERICO OceanBoard V1 (M18) Deliverable (6.2.3)Final version of JERICO OceanBoard (M30)

JERICO OCEANBOARD Overall goals : - gain societal support for sustained observations and monitoring of the marine environment; - raise awareness on the benefits and potential of coastal observations to promote sustainable development of the coastal zone; - disseminating experience, examples and guidelines on the use of derived products and services (esp. targeting environmental managers and industry-related applications with specific examples); - building the future generations of professionals by supporting students and young scientists with high level articles or learning modules on related thematics;

JERICO OCEANBOARD - other considerations The JERICO OceanBoard will serve as a backbone for disseminating knowledge not only to European citizens, but also to the non-EU citizens. This element of the activity promotes synergies with non-EU countries especially in the SouthEastern Mediterranean and Black Sea, and bring them up to speed and promote compatibility with advances in Europe. THE SUCCESS OF THE OCEAN BOARD RELIES UPON: - JERICO partners support with material and contributions (joint effort; editorial group; innovative delivery) - merge with other similar initiatives (build on existing systems like EMECO and Open University)

JERICO SUMMER SCHOOLS (Lead Partner: UoM; Main Partner: DELTARES) T COURSE 1: (lead by Deltares, to be held in the Netherlands at around M16) - new technology and methodology in coastal observations and forecasting (between scientists/tecnicians/engineeers/modellers involved in the running of observatories) T COURSE 2: (lead by UOM, to be held in Malta at around M28) - linking research to management and targeting to train decision makers and environmental managers in the use of products from operational oceanography especially in coastal applications (targeted to managers and users from the public service) Deliverables & 6.3.2: Course 1, Course 2 - on themes related to the project, with sponsored participants, engagement of expert lecturers and preparation of course programme and proceedings. Feedback from participants

JERICO SUMMER SCHOOLS The courses will be open to participants outside the project partnership, dedicated for training persons already engaged on the job in related activities, and serving to provide participants with a broader view on key aspects related to coastal observatories. The courses will also serve to bring project results closer to project partners as well as specifically targeted users. Each course would have a duration of at least one week and held in the June/July or September period. Content of the schools will be chosen in consultation with the project scientific committee. These courses will be also open to non-EU participants.
