Implement Educate Monitor Ask Before You Act! October 2010

 Chip N. Charge is a prospective student- athlete who will be taking an official visit at WSU this weekend. Chip lives in California, so he and his family will arrive in the locale of the campus Thursday night and begin the visit Friday morning. Which of the following expenses may we provide on Thursday night?  A. Meals and Lodging for Chip  B. Meals and Lodging for Chip's parents  C. Both A & B  D. None of the Above

 Countable athletically-related activities may not occur between which times? A. Midnight - 7 a.m. B. 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. C. Midnight – 5 a.m. D. Midnight – 6 a.m.

 Throw In is a senior in high school who is interested in playing soccer next year at Weber State. Next weekend, Throw's high school team will be playing a game on WSU's campus, so the WSU coaches would like Throw to take an official that same weekend. At what point may Throw begin his official visit? A. At any time before or after his competition, without restriction. B. After his competition, upon being released by his high school coach. C. Prior to his competition, as long as he does not participate in any competition related activities with his high school team. D. B and C. E. None of the above.

 An institution may purchase one subscription to a particular recruiting or scouting service, provided: 1. It is made available to all institutions desiring to subscribe and at the same fee rate for all subscribers; 2. The service publicly identifies all applicable rates; 3. Disseminates information (e.g., reports, profiles) about prospective student-athletes at least four times per calendar year; 4. Publicly identifies the geographical scope of the service (e.g., local, regional, national) and reflects broad-based coverage of the geographical area in the information it disseminates;

 Recruiting service criteria continued 5. Provides individual analysis beyond demographic information or rankings for each prospective student-athlete in the information it disseminates; 6. Provides access to samples or previews of the information it disseminates prior to purchase of a subscription; and 7. Provides video that is restricted to regularly scheduled (regular season) high school, preparatory school or two-year college contests and for which the institution made no prior arrangements for recording. (Note: This provision is applicable only if the subscription includes video services.)

 Can subscribe to multiple services provided they all meet the criteria & WSU purchases only one subscription with each service  If a service separates info by gender, can purchase a separate registration for each gender as long as the services requires it.  For PSAs in multiple sports, cannot purchase more than one subscription to the same service unless there is a separate registration fee for access to prospective student- athletes and reports in different sports.

 Can purchase a service with a discounted subscription as long as the service offers the discount to all institutions desiring to subscribe.  May subscribe to a service that provides access to non-scholastic video as long as it is only providing a link to video that is otherwise free and available to general public.  Who uses recruiting and/or scouting services?  We need to know which ones to which you are subscribing to ensure compliance with all related rules.

 Reminder about new rule effective this year  If a student-athlete requests permission in writing to contact another school or to use the one-time transfer exception, we must respond within 7 business days  If permission is denied, we must inform the s-a of the right to a hearing  If a hearing is desired, must be conducted & results must be provided in writing within 15 business days of request  Hearing conducted by people not employed by athletics (FAR, faculty, etc.)

 Recent clarifications from NCAA  constitutes a written request  Response to a request cannot be conditioned on fulfilling a certain condition (e.g. being academically eligible at end of term, return of apparel and equipment)  Hearing cannot be conducted outside 15 day window even if desired by student-athlete  Written requests should be directed toward the Director of Athletics, the SWA, or a compliance officer  Full procedures are available on compliance section of the website

 Early signing period: Nov  MBB, WBB, Golf, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball  Clarification: PSAs complete amateurism questionnaire while completing Eligibility Center registration process  We can’t add them our Institutional Request List if they haven’t completed the questionnaire  We must submit the NLI to the conference within 21 days of signing  If you are signing anyone in the early period, we need the scholarship request forms ASAP

 All student-athletes should be meeting with Zak or Andrea to discuss their spring schedules  Student-athletes with declared majors should meet with their department advisors  November 8: priority registration opens  Anyone who will be graduating needs to pick up the graduation/final term exception form from the compliance office  Need to make sure that will be enrolled in all classes needed for graduation  For those who will be less than full-time, Erica must certify that they are enrolled in all classes needed to graduate

 Students can now submit WSU scholarship application  Required of all student-athletes  Must be done for citizenship each year  Filing now will have them under consideration for institutional scholarships  Can save you budget money
