AMPLIFY THE ARTS 101 AND TECHNOLOGY INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO IMPROVE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Presenter: Dr. Wendy Perry HCS Technology Conference July 22, 2015

Defining Arts Integration  Integrating the arts in the curriculum- instruction in which arts-related concepts and activities are infused with other academic areas (Center for the Applied Research and Educational Improvement, 2003).

Arts Integration: The Authentic Context for 21st Century Learning  They must be able to think critically and creatively.  They must have organizational skills.  They must be able to work well with others.  They will need to be self-confident, self-motivated, and self-disciplined.  They will be required to understand and use Mathematics, Science and Technology.  They will need to be highly effective communicators.  They will need to understand and appreciate cultural diversity

Research Findings  Research has made connections between the arts and academic achievement, particularly when it comes to three areas: listening to music and spatial-temporal reasoning; learning to play music and spatial reasoning; and classroom drama and verbal skills (Mason, Steedly, & Thormann, 2005).  Arts integration involves instruction combining dance, drama, visual arts, creative writing and music with academic subject matter (Southeast Center for Education in the Arts, 2009).

Math Concept: Symmetry Integrating Dance & Technology Video Lines of symmetry d_grade.htm Articles:   

Lesson Focus: Integrating Math, Visual Arts, and Technology Grade 4 Performance Task/Work Time Students will work at learning stations targeting the in depth knowledge of lines of symmetry. Identify objects around the room, photographs, technology website, hands on craft activity (butterfly). Here is how to incorporate technology………. Technology Connection:  Video record students demonstrating symmetry through body movements and positions.  Technology website identifying objects of symmetry  Multimedia sources Suggestions:  Incorporate music and dance  High Museum photos showing lines of symmetry  Model paper fold that demonstrates examples of symmetry Closing  Students share what they learned- Example: oral presentations, artifacts, and use of active board to demonstrate understanding of objects with lines of symmetry  View video recordings/multi media source Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. Mini Lesson: Introduce lesson with an engaging opening. Mirroring movement activity or show video on symmetry EQ: 1. How can students identify symmetrical objects? 2. How can I relate symmetry to real world concepts?

Arts Integration & Technology 21 st Century Skills Rigorous, Relevant, Relationships  The student makes connections to other disciplines and the world through the visual arts (National Standard 6).  The student makes connections from the world of art to other areas of learning and personal endeavor.  The student informs study and production of art by integrating information and skills from other areas of knowledge and academic disciplines (e.g., math, reading, English Language Arts, social studies, science, music, dance, theater arts, world languages, career awareness, and technology). CONNECTIONS Make learning Relevant Narrative writing ELA, Math Symmetry identify in photo

_Final_ pdf Arts and Technology Resources at a Glance Drama develops higher order language and literacy skills as students act out historical or literary figures, they immerse themselves in a theme and can explore and learn about it in a personal way. Music enhances language learning by teaching students about rhythm, pitch, and sound. Rhythm helps students learn rhymes and develop phonological awareness — components of reading. Repetitive songs help teach academic facts to be memorized (like the multiplication tables) and help make the learning experience easier and more enjoyable. Fine Art experiences develop literacy, numeracy, and writing skills. Drawing and painting reinforce motor skills and can also be a way of learning shapes, contrasts, boundaries, spatial relationships, size and other math concepts.
