Making a Case: Major Data Questions and Corresponding Resources I.Who is in Your Community? Data Sources for Basic Demographic Information: US Census Bureau’s American FactFinder MPI Data Hub MPI ELL Information Center Office of Refugee Resettlement Department of Homeland Security

> The American FactFinder allows you to break data down by various geographical levels (e.g., state, county, metropolitan area) and choose the indicators you’re interested in. Some tables are not available at lower levels of geography because their small sample sizes would make estimates unreliable. (TIP: Under ‘Search Options,’ first select the level of ‘Geography’ you’re interested in, then go to ‘Topics’)

> Here, for instance, you can choose to look into “Poverty Status by Language Spoken at Home” in El Paso County (TIP: Type ‘poverty’ in the search window to pull all tables containing poverty-related data or other relevant key word)

> Ultimately, the FactFinder tool generates a table for you that looks like this, with the parameters that you have specified.

> At the state level, the MPI Data Hub provides pre-made tables with basic demographic (as well as language/education, workforce, and income/poverty) information on immigrant populations

> Here, for instance, is a ready-made table on the Data Hub showing Poverty Status of Residents in Texas by Language Spoken at Home

Making a Case: Major Data Questions and Corresponding Resources II. What are Major Indicators of Poverty and Need? Data Sources for Poverty Rates, Access to Health Care, and Access to Other Welfare Benefits: American FactFinder MPI Data Hub Urban Institute’s Children of Immigrants Data Tool Annie E. Casey Kids Count Data Center

Making a Case: Major Data Questions and Corresponding Resources III. What Disparities in Outcomes Exist Between Populations? Data Sources for Education Outcomes: NAEP Data Tool Department Education’s ED Data Express

Encouraging Data Collection and Use In Your Community Local data are often collected but not publicly available and/or analyzed (i.e., longitudinal academic outcome data, birth records) Education data systems should collect relevant data on e.g. ELL subgroups or former ELL status and early childhood programs should collect home language Social services and other agencies could collect data on home language of clients or use public data on languages spoken within catchment area
