A) What is the difference between the following 3 types of broadcasters public service broadcasting commercial broadcasting subscription channels. Also identify the broadcasting companies in this country who are Public service broadcasters and commercial broadcasters. Broadcasters public services: BBC is a public service because we( the public) pay TV license approx £12 a month. By the public paying TV license we fund enough to not make adverts for the BBC channels. Another way of the BBC making money is selling merchandise like, magazines, DVD’s and also Selling format. Commercial Broadcasting: Channels like ITV, Channel 4 and channel 5, they all have adverts they make the majority of there money from commercials. The two other ways of these channels making money and that is by Premium rate voting shows i.e. X factor, I’m a Celebrity get me out of here and Big brother. people watching these shows vote for their favorite person they want to stay on the show which will make that channel money. Also there’s another way for channels like this to make money, That is competition within shows, i.e. this morning shows, they will have such basic questions like `What’s the name of the popular film, King… a) King Tong, b) King Kong or c) King Pong?` millions Of people call up each competition and with calls costing £1.50 and more from a mobile this will make up to £26,000 each competition. Subscription channels: Most popular subscription channels are Love Film and Netflix. In order to watch things on these Channels you must subscribe by signing up and pay monthly.

B) Compare how public service broadcasters, commercial broadcasters and subscription channels make money from audiences? MERCHANDISE: They way Public service broadcasters, commercial broadcasters and subscription channels Could sell there merchandise to make more money to their audience. i.e. top gear produce magazines monthly for people to buy. Also selling DVD’s of series will also make money from there audiences. TV LICENSE: BBC channels are the only channels that don’t show advertisements because the public pay something called TV license which fund enough yearly to not have to pay for advertisement to show in between shows which saves the company lots of money. COMMERCIALS: Commercials are shown on every other channel apart from the BBC channels, they get there money from companies paying them to broadcast certain advertisements for products before certain shows at a certain time. PREMIUM RATE VOTING: Premium rate voting is shows like X factor, I’m a Celebrity get me out of here and Big brother. people watching these shows vote for their favorite person they want to stay on the show which will make that channel money because calls cost £1.50+ each time someone calls up. COMPETITONS: That is competition within shows, i.e. this morning shows, they will have such basic questions like ` What’s the name of the popular film, King… a) King Tong, b) King Kong or c) King Pong?` millions of people call up each competition and with calls costing £1.50 and more from a mobile this will make up to £26,000 each competition. SELLING FORMATS: Public service broadcasters, commercial broadcasters and subscription channels will sell their formats which is ideas of a programme to different companies to make their money SPONCORSHIPS: Companies will make most of their money through sponsorships.
