“ Dreams are a conversation with oneself, a dialogue of symbols and images that takes place between the unconscious and conscious levels of the mind.” David Fontana

Many cultures believed that dreams came from an outside source like gods or spirits. Egyptian Dreams carried messages from good or bad spirits Dreams were opposites-happy dreams=disaster and nightmares=better times to come When a person was having troubles in their life and wanted help from god, they would sleep in a temple, the next morning a priest, the Master of the Secret Things, interpret the dreams

Built special shrines to dream spirits Dreams were the result of outside forces, such as the gods. Morpheus passed on warnings and prophecies to people in their dreams Hypnos was the god of sleep Aristotle- dreams are a recollection of the day’s events dreams reflect a person's bodily health.

dreams were supernatural over seven hundred mentions of dreams in the Bible many beilieved that God revealed himself through dreams Martin Luther- dreams are the work of the Devil

looked to dreams for their next course of action. Consciousness(soul) leaves the body during sleep and travels in other worldly realms If suddenly awakened, their soul may fail to return to the body. For this reason, some Chinese are wary of alarm clocks.

Share the concept of a distinct dream dimension Believed ancestors lived in their dreams and take on non-human forms like plants. visiting and having contact with their ancestors. helped to point their mission or role in life

Psychologists believe that dreams express the hidden workings of the mind. Some believe that dreams are a way of dealing with conflict in life. Sigmund Freud-dreams are wish fulfillments or expressions of repressed desires. Carl Jung-the mind contains symbolism drawn on by all cultures in their dreams. “The Collective Unconscious” Jung-dreams remind us of our wishes, realize the things we unconsciously yearn for, and help us to fulfill our wishes

Surrealists were fascinated with the unconscious. Believed that Freud's theories on dreams, ego, superego and the id opened doors to the authentic self and a truer reality (the "surreal"). They liked the possibilities of chance and spontaneity. Elements Deep space-endless Atmosphere-fog, mist, steam, smoke Bizarre size relationships Combining elements that don’t belong together
