The Virginia and New Jersey Plan The Great Compromise By: Sara Schneider Salma Quintanilla Shoshana Schneider Nina Schneider Simran Shetye

What is it? Virginia: proposed legislative branch with two branches (cameral / federal). Believed representation is connected with population. New Jersey: proposed legislative branch for each state (unicameral / state). Believed representation should be definite.

Cause… The plans were created because the Articles of Confederation were weak and unsatisfactory to govern the American people

Effect… Flaws were deciphered: -National government could veto state laws and representation was based on population -Gave new government power to tax -Preserved state rights and equality

What is it? (Continued) Agreement that large and small states reached during the Constitutional Convention in Legislation that states had to follow as a part of the USA.

Cause… To form a compromise between the Virginia and New Jersey Plans to create a form of legislation in the USA

Effect… Created House of Representatives and the Senate Two representatives from each state were in the Senate House of Representatives was appointed by the population, which is determined every ten years by a census
