Online Searching, 4 th ed. Chapter 8 America: History & Life Search Example 1: Finding Book Reviews pp. 157 – 158 Librarian’s Guide to Cultivating Database Skills for Research and Instruction

Quick reminder – not the Basic Search – go to Advanced Search

Now we’re in our (Advanced) element! Although the blue bar at the top, always present, has a number of advanced and interesting options: Limits unique to this (history!) database

Finding reviews of two different books by Stanley Engerman. (Boolean operator capitalized just to make it stand out; not required) And way down under Limits – the function for specifying we want only Book Reviews.

A sampling of results… as noted in the textbook, beware the trap of thinking the book title or book author’s name can be searched as a Subject (even tho you see both in the lists of Subjects in this display)

Where those headings really came from: snips from the full record for this entry: Person who wrote the review and where it was published These are the actual Subject Terms assigned to this record… The book’s title usually appears (full or in part) as the title of the review (why we searched words from it in the TI field) Engerman’s name in the People field
