What is democracy? Democracy allows ordinary people to have a say in what the Government does. It allows people to decide how their country and community should be run. It’s a chance to hear other peoples opinions on the Election. Adults who are British citizens can compliment on how this is affecting their everyday lives. The most common type of Democracy is a Representative Democracy. Citizens choose who they want to represent them in the Houses of Parliament through the Election. It is important that people’s voices can be heard.

What is happening on may 7th2015? May 7th is an important day for the country (England), it is the day of the General Election. In UK general elections, voting takes place in all parliamentary constituencies of the United Kingdom to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to seats in the House of Commons, the lower House of Parliament. The deadline to apply to register to vote was 20th April 2015. If you are registered you will receive a polling card in the run-up to the Election telling you where your polling station is. The card is for information only and you don’t need to take it with you to vote, although it can speed things up. Who can vote? How do they vote? Ordinary people from the U.K. can vote. To be able to vote you need to be on the Electoral roll. Adults that have applied, and are 18, get to vote. Citizens choose who they want to represent, vire and Election. You can only vote if you have a yellow voting sticker or stamp. You must have different types of citizenships. If you want to vote you HAVE to be a BRITISH CITIZEN.

Why should they vote? It is important to vote for your country so that you have a leader to run it. There are many political parties and we vote for which one we think is best. You should vote because if you don’t have a leader to run your community then how would you live? Each political party wins votes from you so they know who will lead the community. 1. Representative Democracy (also indirect Democracy) is a variety of Democracy founded on the principle of elected official representing a group of people, as opposed to direct Democracy. This type of voting is a system of the Government in which all eligible citizens vote on Representatives to past laws for them. We also elect local and state officials. These Representatives then poll their constituents on the various matters and Represent them in the large meeting named ‘Congress’.

Magna carta- why was it introduced, who by? The Magna Carta is the great Charter agreed by King John at Runnymede, near Windsor, on 5th June 1215. It gave rights to ordinary people. It is one of the most famous documents of the world. There are many different clauses in the Magna Carta. This memordeum states that on 24th June two copies were given to the Bishop of Lincoln, another to the Bishop of Worcester and four more to Master Elias of Dereham. Pankhurst, suffragettes, what did they do and when? Women's votes- emily Pankhurst, suffragettes, what did they do and when? Before 1918 no women were allowed to vote, these were men's orders, until Emily Pankhurst a Suffragette stopped this. She bravely stood up for herself and gave her say in what should be done in the Elections and what shouldn't. Emily Pankhurst’s real name was Getty Emeline Pankhurst. What has the parliament have to do with the elections? At a General Election, all constituencies become vacant and a Member Of Parliament (MPs) is elected from each from a list of candidates standing for Election. General Elections happen every five years. If an MP dies or retires, a by-Election is held in that constituency to find a new MP for that area. When Parliament is dissolved every seat in the House Of Commons becomes vacant and a General Election is held. Each constituency in the U.K. elects one Member of Parliament (MPs) to a seat in the House Of Commons.
