Big picture

outcome By the end of this lesson all students should know the difference between equal rights and roles Different Christian attitudes to the roles of men and women in Christianity Should be able to evaluate different Christian attitudes to equal rights for women in religion

Different Christian attitudes to equal rights for women in religion There are different attitudes to equal rights for women in Christianity

The traditional attitude held by some protestants Christians This teaches that men should be the head of the family and women should not speak in church because this is what the bible teaches. Jesus did not choose women as disciples St. Paul said in the bible men were created first

The liberal Christians believe that men and women have equal roles and accept women as priest This is because Jesus treated women as his equals and had women followers. ST. Paul also said there is neither male nor female for you are all one person in Jesus Christ There is evidence in the bible that Jesus treated women as his equals The first person Jesus appeared to after his resurrection was a woman.

The Roman catholic believe men and women are equal, but only men can become priest They believe this because Jesus only chose men to be his successors Jesus was a man and the priest represents Jesus in the mass It is the teaching of catholic catechism that men and women are equal, and should have equal rights in life and society God created man and woman at the same time in his own image and therefore of equal status.
