Structure HCMR

FISHERIES RESEARCH ACTIVITY Scientific Management of Fisheries Resources And Long-term Data Collection * Fishery biology of the most commercial species * Dynamics of most exploited species. * Monitoring and control of fishery resources. * Fishery management, legislation and policy making * Fishery ecology. HCMR

FISHERIES RESEARCH ACTIVITY Identification, delimitation and study of new commercial fishing grounds * Deep-sea fisheries * Fishery management of protected zones (artificial reefs). * Stock identification. * Delineate appropriate bio-geographical areas for integrated management. HCMR

FISHERIES RESEARCH ACTIVITY Study of new, modern, efficient and environmental friendly fishing gears and selectivity studies * Modernization of fishing techniques * Introduction of FAD fishery in Greece * Selectivity of fishing gear * Capture behaviour HCMR

FISHERIES RESEARCH ACTIVITY Ecosystem-based fisheries studies Interaction between ecology and species biology Effects of fishing on the environment Feeding studies Community structure, environment and fisheries interaction HCMR

FISHERIES RESEARCH ACTIVITY Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Research and Development Study and development of coastal and small scale marine fisheries and aquaculture Environmental studies and environmental effects of coastal uses (tourism, aquaculture, fisheries, agriculture, urban development, industry, protection schemes) Social and economic analysis of coastal zone uses and legislation Study of the interactions between the environment and fisheries and aquaculture HCMR

FISHERIES RESEARCH ACTIVITY Collection of data and organisation of databases and decision making analysis tools (G.I.S.) * Organisation of a data collection system in Greece. * Organization of a monitoring system of the fishing effort in Greece. * Development of databases and GIS for the management of fisheries. * Develop methodologies to evaluate the impact of existing alternative tools within the CFP. HCMR

Special Projects Significance: Integrated research, development and administration objectives Mobilisation of all the Institute’s capacity HCMR

IMAS-FISH Research Actions Development of an Integrated Management System to support the sustainability of Greek Fisheries resources IMAS-FISH HCMR

IMAS-FISH Research Actions Main Objectives Collection and harmonization of existing data and databases Data quality evaluation Development of common data analysis algorithms Development of a fisheries database binded with statistical and GIS modules Integration of environmental data in fisheries data analysis Development of spatial and temporal models for the identification of trends in fisheries stocks Development of fishing gear selectivity models Harmonization of existing data bases to the Reg. 1543/2000/EC HCMR

MariFish ERA-NET MariFish ERA-NET Research Actions The Institute participate to the MariFish ERA-NET What are the possible benefits arising from MariFish ? Closer links between funders of fisheries research Closer links between funders and the scientific community Clearer definition of management drivers Better identification of science priorities Joint programmes Joint funding of strategic needs Links to FP7 HCMR

MariFish ERA-NET Research Actions Proposed Objectives Develop a durable network of national research funders in member and associates states of the EU and integrate the new member states and associated partners into established common information, coordination and funding procedures. Exchange information on funding mechanisms and develop procedures to establish common calls for funding joint programmes, based on best practice. Identify existing linkages of national research programmes, work of international organisations and global scientific programmes already coordinating and funding research. Compile and analyse programme data for topic areas where coordination and linkages with fisheries research could be enhanced, for example economic and socio-economic research. Analyse nationally funded research programmes and identify where are areas of common interest, gaps and possible duplication. Identify specific research topics which would benefit from coordination at the European level. Develop shared research programmes in at least 5 key identified through this analysis. Undertake a ten year-forward-look exercise to identify strategic and innovative requirements for fisheries research and develop jointly funded programmes to address these.

International Cooperations Founding Members of EFARO organization Within its research activities, the Institute has created links with: 1. Danish Institute of Agriculture and Fisheries Economics, Denmark 2. IFREMER, France 3. Bundesforschungsanstalt für Fischerei (BFA), Germany 4. Netherlands Institute for Fisheries research (RIVO), Netherlands 5. Institute of Marine Research, Bergen, Norway 6. Instituto de Investigação das Pescas e do Mar (IPIMAR), Portugal 7.
