TEAMBUILDING MICHELLE DALY DAVID BALLARD MICHAEL CHERRY EDUC 904 Interpersonal LeadershipJuly, 2010

Objectives  Experience Teambuilding  Explore key teambuilding concepts  Lencioni – The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team  Katzenbach & Smith – The Wisdom of Teams  Larson & LaFasto – TeamWork

A Towering Success  The challenge: As a team, create the tallest structure  Use only the materials provided.  We have about 20 minutes to complete the project.  Each group will be asked to present your tower and construction organization.  The structure must have a “cool” name. Please list and explain the awesome features of your structure.

Tower of Success Reflections  How did you feel about the outcome?  What important things happened during the build? Surprising? Stressful?  What did you learn about teambuilding?  How does this apply to your “real” world?  What strategies would you use to combat dysfunctional team behavior?

What is a team? “A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable” (Katzenbach & Smith, 2003, p. 45)

Characteristics of Effective Teams  A clear, elevating goal  Results-driven structure  Competent team members  Unified commitment  Collaborative climate  Standards of excellence  External support and recognition  Principled leadership (Larson & LaFasto, 1989)

The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team  Inattention to results  Avoidance of accountability  Lack of commitment  Fear of conflict  Absence of trust  Status and Ego  Low standards  Ambiguity  Artificial harmony  Invulnerability DysfunctionsBehavior (Lencioni, 2002)
