Indefinite Pronouns By: Matthew and Davis

WHAT IS AN INDEFINITE PRONOUN Indefinite Pronoun: An indefinite pronoun is a pronoun that replaces a noun but never specifies which noun it is replacing. Example: All of the teachers at Hightower Trail will have their picture taken tomorrow.

Rules Every once in a while you will find an indefinite pronoun that can be singular or plural not just either or. A lot of the time, the phrase that follows the indefinite pronoun will tell if the pronoun is plural or singular. If you are using a pronoun that is singular make sure the indefinite pronoun is also singular. Example: All of the food was still in her basket. In this sentence food is singular so that means the indefinite pronoun, all, is also singular. The antecedent her is also singular because all is singular.

Your Turn! Underline the indefinite pronoun in each sentence. Then circle the correct pronoun. Also write if the indefinite pronoun is plural or singular.

1) Anyone who raises (his or her, their) hand with a question will usually be told to talk. 2) Many people who have good jobs own (his or her, their) own car. 3) All of the birds in the park wanted to be given (his or her, their) own fair share of food. 4) None of the students in Mrs. Grays class wanted to take (his or her, their) test about grammar. 5) One of the toys had (its, their) own color scheme.

6) Both of the kids were happy about (his or her, their) new toy. 7) Neither the teacher nor the student wanted to go to (her, their) class today. 8) All of the kids in the school wanted to do (his or her, their) own project for art class. 9) Something in the corner just moved (its, their) tail. 10) None of the wars the U.S. has fought have been on (our, their) own turf.

Congratulations on learning what indefinite pronouns are! Now go and tell the world!
