School of Engineering & Electronics Safety Presentation

School of Engineering and Electronics Your Safety! You are your own safety advisor! Where are the Emergency Exits? Where are the Fire Extinguishers? Where are the First Aid Boxes?

School of Engineering and Electronics 1 Requirements! Requirements! You must read the School Safety Documents. You must complete the online questionnaire when requested. –Allows verification that documents have been read.

School of Engineering and Electronics Think Safety! Electricity + water Cables & Hoses Naked Flames Flammable Material Chemicals Bottled Gases Lasers & Radiation Heavy or Unstable Loads Difficult Access

School of Engineering and Electronics Who can help? Your Supervisor or Line Manager School Safety Advisor School Safety Specialist Technical Staff Academic Staff University Health & Safety Department

School of Engineering and Electronics Key Safety Personnel School Safety Advisor Building Technical Services Officer (TSO) Safety Specialists –Hazardous Materials (chemicals) –Electrical –Mechanical –Radiation & Lasers

School of Engineering and Electronics In Emergency! If alarm sounds leave the building! Do not return until the all clear is given. If it is safe to do so, switch off equipment before leaving. Only use fire extinguishers, if your exit path is clear, you are in no danger and you have been trained in their use.

School of Engineering and Electronics First Aid Find out who the first aiders are and where you can find them. Each Laboratory has a First Aid Box - know its location. Only move casualties if they are in direct danger and there is no danger to yourself.

School of Engineering and Electronics Lab Discipline! Eating, drinking & smoking are prohibited in all teaching & research laboratories. Don’t take risks. –If unsure stop & ask for help.

School of Engineering and Electronics Geneeral Risk Assessment Before any new potentially hazardous activity takes place, it is Risk Assessed. A Risk Assessment form RA1 must be completed for all experimental or project work & a copy filed with the Building TSO.

School of Engineering and Electronics Risk Assessment Risk Assessments are prepared by those closest to the activity. If unsure how to proceed or complete the forms - ask. The Risk Assessment must be read and signed by everyone who engages in the activity. Risk Assessments must be reviewed annually.

School of Engineering and Electronics Risk Assessment If you are required to engage in any pre-existing activity where there may be an element of risk and you have not signed the risk assessment: –Ask to see and sign the risk assessment. –If no risk assessment exists: Prepare one yourself if appropriate or insist that one is prepared by the individual responsible for the activity.

School of Engineering and Electronics COSHH Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. COSHH form must be completed in addition to the RA1 risk assessment where hazardous substances are used. Forms available from: safety/risk-assessments-checklists/risk- assessments safety/risk-assessments-checklists/risk- assessments

School of Engineering and Electronics Chemicals All purchases of chemicals must follow the School approved procedure. –See They must be clearly marked and stored safely. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must always be worn when handling them. Consult the Hazardous Substances Safety Specialist if there is any doubt.

School of Engineering and Electronics Chemicals Some chemicals require specialist training before an individual is permitted to use them. –Hydrofluoric acid (HF) –Piranha etches Contact Hazardous Substances Specialist.

School of Engineering and Electronics Hazardous Waste A COSHH form should exist and give detailed instruction on safe disposal. In all cases inform the School Hazardous Substances Safety Specialist who will arrange for safe disposal. Never pour liquid chemicals down the drain or place solid waste in lab waste bins.

School of Engineering and Electronics P.P.E. If a risk assessment has highlighted the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), it must be worn. If a recommended grade is required, consult the appropriate Safety Specialist, the School Safety Advisor or refer to the University Occupational Health Service.

School of Engineering and Electronics Accidents All Accidents, Incidents or Occupational Health problems must be recorded. –Online form at departments/health-safety/accident- reporting Action will be taken to prevent repeat occurrences.

School of Engineering and Electronics Information Ultimate responsibility for safety rests with the Head of School. All School safety documents are online at University of Edinburgh Health & Safety Department at departments/health-safety/home Advice from: –School Safety Advisor –School Safety Specialists –Building TSOs

School of Engineering and Electronics Remember! Safety is the concern of everyone Don’t take unnecessary risks Please ask for help.
