Presentation at the KPDA CEO Morning Learning Session By Winnie Imanyara, Executive Director, Housing Finance Foundation 7 th July 2015

“We Have Been Forgotten!”

The building and construction sector contributes 3% of all informal jobs in Kenya and is a key employment opportunity for the youth. Yes, despite being a critical supplier of jobs, building and construction is faced by significant skills shortage with only 25% of workers formally trained. “In a pool of 100 masons who say they are qualified, less than 10% have the desired level of skills; in order to select who to work with, we give them assignments and establish who can perform. We face a significant shortage of relevant skill for finishers, and have to import them from China, India, and Eastern Europe. The cost of expatriation can go a long way in improving salaries for local staff if available in sufficient skill level. Right now it takes nearly 4 times as long to complete finishing of developments.” ~ A private sector actor in the building & construction industry in Kenya

HFF’s core pillars are a direct response to the challenges in the B&C industry and a response to address the youth unemployment challenge

“This is a transformational project…” Mugo Kibati, Director General, Vision 2030 A Vision 2030 Flagship Initiative

Relevant technical & 21 st century readiness training Pillar One

Using “live” construction sites to train/re-train workers TVET ON WHEELS Komarock 5B Presenting Occupational Standards to the PS State Department of Science and Technology VIRTUAL TVET training on plumbing

Improve financial access for TVET students, institutions and artisans Pillar Two

3) HFF has lobbied 300M from HELB for TVET Student Funding 1) In partnership with KIVA, HFF is offering TVET students loan financing 2) In partnership with KIVA, HFF is offering Fundi Pesa loans to finance toolkits for artisans

Pillar Three Creating markets that work for artisans

How We Can Partner 1)Sponsorship opportunities via your company’s CSR activities to provide TVET and training program scholarships via HFF for un/under skilled workers and/or unemployed youth 2)Underwrite training of workers on your construction sites to enhance their skills 3)Support the apprenticeship program by availing opportunities in your organization

How We Can Partner 4) Support & utilize our forthcoming National Artisan Database which will be a platform for connecting skilled artisans to:  Relevant training opportunities  Job and apprenticeship opportunities  Accessing finance for training, tools, etc Property developers can revolutionize the way they employ artisans by removing corruption, nepotism and most importantly, the employment of un- or under-skilled artisans to their job sites…resulting in improved workmanship and improved efficiency for construction timelines.
