SETTING THE STANDARD Getting to Know Everyday Mathematics

SETTING THE STANDARD Welcome and Introduction Thank you for allowing me to spend some time talking with you this evening about mathematics! Teri King – Math Specialist at GPAEA Pekin is one of 12 school districts in SE Iowa that I support in regards to mathematics instruction. This large group forum doesn’t lend itself very well to questions, so I will spend about 30 minutes sharing information with you, and then at the conclusion of that presentation you can visit classrooms to ask questions of teachers or chat informally with me!

SETTING THE STANDARD Time Travel… I would like for all of the adults in the room to think back to your elementary school years. Picture yourself in your 3 rd grade classroom during a MATH lesson. What types of things do you remember learning?

SETTING THE STANDARD Why Change? “I like the “old” way. This isn’t the way I was taught. Why change?” Everyday Math isn’t the “cause” of the change in math instruction, it’s the IOWA CORE and SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENTS that require that we do things differently than we have in the past. Instruction MUST be different than in the past in order to reach the goal of college and career readiness for ALL students.

SETTING THE STANDARD Journey to Iowa Core Mathematics 1. The Iowa State Board of Education adopted Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts and mathematics on July 29, CCSS in English language arts and mathematics replaced the literacy and mathematics sections of the Iowa Core. 3. Additional Iowa items (only two standards at 2 nd grade for grades K-5) were adopted by the State Board on November 17,

SETTING THE STANDARD Curriculum vs. Resource Everyday Mathematics is NOT our math curriculum, but instead is a resource which nicely supports the legislative mandates in the Iowa Core of “what” and “how” we should teach mathematics. The Iowa Core, which IS our math curriculum, includes both Content Standards and Standards for Mathematical Practice.

SETTING THE STANDARD PCSD Math Instruction – “CORE” “Core” Instruction - 60 minutes daily  Everyday Math resource  Mental Math and Reflexes  Math Message  Discussion of Home/Study Links  “New” learning  “Cycled” review

SETTING THE STANDARD In Everyday Math, you can expect: A problem-solving approach based on everyday situations An instructional approach that revisits concepts regularly Frequent practice of basic skills, often through games Lessons based on activities and discussion, not a textbook Mathematical content that goes beyond basic arithmetic

SETTING THE STANDARD Mathematics Dot has two Quarters. Jim has three dimes. Hank has a nickel. How much money do they have altogether?

SETTING THE STANDARD Mathematics I have coins worth 42 cents. What are two possibilities for the coins I might have?

SETTING THE STANDARD Mathematics

SETTING THE STANDARD Mathematics Draw a six-sided irregular polygon with a perimeter of 40 units.

SETTING THE STANDARD Everyday Math Program Routines Frames and Arrows Fact Triangles What’s My Rule? Name-Collection Boxes Games

SETTING THE STANDARD Function Machine IN OUT RULE? In Out

SETTING THE STANDARD Fact Triangle *9* , = = = = 6

SETTING THE STANDARD Name-Collection Box 12 a dozen XXXX XXXX XXXX * 2

SETTING THE STANDARD Everyday Mathematics Games Provide frequent practice Fun and flexible Played regularly

SETTING THE STANDARD Multiple Algorithms An algorithm is a specific series of steps that will give you the right answer every time. There is more than one right algorithm. Allowing students to develop their own working procedures proves that they understand the concept behind the solution.

SETTING THE STANDARD PCSD Math Instruction – “More” “More” Instruction 30 minutes daily scheduled on a six-day cycle Sample “More” Schedule: Days 1 and 4 – Computer time for students to independently practice online Everyday Math games that have been introduced during “Core” instruction. Days 2 and 5 – Additional collaborative problem solving opportunities using What’s the Problem (K), Problem Solver II (1-5), as well as ten frame experiences (K-2) and learning basic fact strategies. Days 3 and 6 – Teacher provides small group instruction based on data gathered during “Core” instruction; students have an opportunity to experience centers which enhance “Core” concepts and skills.
