1 Multifacultary studies in Geomatics

2 What is geomatics? Geomatics is a scientific term that comprises collection, processing, analysing, storing, distribution, presentation and application of spatial information. Geomatics includes, but is not confined to, traditional fields such as surveying, cartography, geodesy, hydrography, photogrammetry and remote sensing. Geomatics is often divided into the three main fields of geodesy, cartography & geographical information science and photogrammetry & remote sensing. Different profiles Presentation and management of digital map databases. Further development of methods for automated map representation. Development and application of geographical information systems and geodata. Geodetical surveys and calculations, mainly by the use of satellites (GPS). Mapping, positioning and navigation in the North Sea. Conduct work related to mapping and surveying in public work. Photogrammetric shape- and dimension control. Application of remote sensing for natural resource mapping and environmental surveillance. Photogrammetric mapping for technical, economical and topographical maps.

3 Job opportunities Geodesy Especially within the field of satellite geodesy, there is a growing need for qualified candidates. The biggest need is within GPS-related jobs, GPS being more and more important for navigation, surveillance and surveying. For example, Oslo Taxi is using GPS to optimize their routes and to faster reach and bring the customers. There is also an increasing use of GPS for mapping and updating some types of map objects. Cartography and geographical information science There is a big - and increasing - need for cartographers with data and informatic background in the norwegian map industry. At Gløshaugen, many different environments are located close to eachother; this give good opportunities to educate competent cartographers with the needed skills. One should make sure to take enough courses in data/informatics at the faculty of physics, informatics and mathematics, to get a solid geomatics background. Photogrammetry and remote sensing Especially in the field of remote sensing, there is, and will be, good job opportunities. There is a trend of replacing aerophotographic mapping with satellite mapping and updating. The development of new satellites and the liberation of spy satellites will further accelerate this development.

4 Who can attend the Studies in Geomatics? The School of Geomatics are mainly for students with a background in the following fields: –Civil and environmental engineering –Computer and information science –Electrical engineering and telecommunications –Geography –Applied earth sciences –Marine technology Other backgrounds will also be accepted, as long as the formal background and skills satisfy the demands.
