Austin Community College TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM It’s all about the Kids!

What Is Alternative Certification? The alternative teacher certification program allows individuals with a bachelor’s degree, and who are considering a career change with the desire to serve, the opportunity to become a classroom teacher.

Why Alternative Certification? Due to teacher shortages in certain certification areas, the high cost of college training, and limitations on college enrollment, the state of Texas created this alternative route for becoming a classroom teacher. Currently, over 50% of new teachers come from alternative programs.

Requirements for Program 1. BACHELORS DEGREE OR HIGHER HOURS OF COURSE WORK WITHIN CONTENT AREAS 3. A MINIMUM 2.5 GPA 4. 3 PERSONAL REFERENCES 5.A QUALIFYING INTERVIEW 6.TEACHER CHARACTERISTICS

We start getting you ready in August EDTC 2000 Professional Development for TExES Class is held online the last two weeks of August Participation is mandatory! Highlights Include: Learn valuable test-taking skills Survey of necessary competencies for success on the TExES Opportunity to take the PACT (Pre-Admission Content Test) exam and become highly qualified

And you keep learning… EDTC 1090: Methods of Tutoring Students Class is held online the last two weeks of September Participation is mandatory! Highlights Include: Learn about the realities of teaching and tutoring tips Discover the different learning styles and how to work with each style Learn how to work with all levels of students and SUCCEED!

Coursework Begins January 11, 2011 EDTC 3000 Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings with one Saturday School support session each month. Attendance is mandatory! Highlights Include: Graduate-level coursework Designing effective, responsive instruction Creating positive learning environments Planning for the first year of teaching Fulfilling professional roles and responsibilities

Summer Institute Classes are held Monday through Friday 8:45 – 4:30 with two night sessions. Attendance is mandatory!  Bilingual Generalist EC-6 Educational theory and practice with a focus on second language acquisition  Special Education EC-6 Educational theory and practice with a focus on special needs learners  Science and Mathematics 4-8 Educational theory and practice with a focus on math and/or science Highlights Include: The “how to’s” of teaching Intern preparation for August classrooms – First 20 Days of School June , 2011

EDTC 3004 Successful Teaching Practices - Teaching Internship 5 Sessions are held on Thursdays from 6-9 and Induction Training with mentor one Saturday in September. As usual, attendance is mandatory! Highlights Include: First year teacher intern and ACC supervisors working closely to identify and solve any questions and/or concerns Supervisor support with effective classroom strategies through problem solving sessions. August-November, year 2

EDTC 3005 Online: Supporting the Teaching Experience Teacher Internship and Research Project Highlights Include: Reflections on personal, professional, and instructional progress that is classroom student data driven Project satisfies PDAS requirements for working with at-risk students January- April, year 2

First Year Teacher Intern First year teacher salary and benefits Online training with classroom support from ACC supervisor and assigned campus teacher-mentor Assessments and evaluations by ACC supervisor, campus administrator, and campus mentor Successful completion that leads to a standard teaching certificate in Texas Memories!

ACC’s Teacher Certification Program Success Making a 20 month commitment Determining the components and their application of public education’s pedagogy and professional responsibilities Engaging in a hands-on Summer training focused on curriculum and instruction methodology Entering a first year teaching internship with campus and ACC mentoring support along with continuing online professional development Succeeding as a classroom teacher through rigorous and seamless classroom and online experiences that build the foundations of successful practices Successfully completing all professional exams (TExES) Lasting personal and professional relationships

Application Process 1. Completed application with processing fee June 1- Sept 15 $60 Sept 16- Nov. 1 $80 2. ACC selection committee A review is made of applicant transcripts, references, and resumes. Interviews are scheduled from June through November. 50 individuals are selected for cohort. Additional applicants are placed on a waiting list 3. Final deadline for completed applications is November 1.
