SOLAR SYSTEM by Mika Lehto Our solar system is very BIG. The solar system has 8 planets called Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

SUN SUN  The sun is a star and a star is a ball of gas.  Our Sun is a star found at the center of our Solar System.  Light from the Sun reaches Earth in around 8 minutes.

MERCURY MERCURY  Mercury has craters all over it.  It is the closest to the sun.  You moved to Mercury you would not weigh as much as you do on Earth. This planet is often called a morning star.

VENUS VENUS  It about the size of Earth.  It the 3 rd brightest planet. The planet Venus has long been one of the most misunderstood of all the inner planets.

EARTH EARTH  Earth is the planet we live on.  Earth is the biggest inner planet.  The Earth's temperature and weather are just right to keep us alive.

MARS MARS It called the red planet. Mars is very small. Evidence suggests that Mars once had rivers. If you stood on Mars, you would see red dirt and rocks everywhere.

THE ASTEROID BELT THE ASTEROID BELT A asteroid belt is made of rocks. The belt is in between mars and Jupiter. More than 7000 asteroids have been discovered. Several hundred more are discovered each year.

JUPTER It the largest planet in the solar system. Jupiter has 63 moons. The Earth could fit inside Jupiter more than 1000 times. Jupiter is by far the largest planet.

SATURN SATURN Saturn has a ring around it. Saturn has 31 moons. Because Saturn is such a lightweight planet and it spins so fast. In many ways, Saturn is similar to Jupiter, but smaller.

URANUS URANUS Uranus rotates on its side. It has 27 moons. Uranus is a gas giant. It is believed that long ago a very large object smashed into this planet. The crash was so powerful that it completely changed the direction of Uranus' planetary rotation.

NEPTUNE NEPTUNE Neptune is the windiest planet. It is a blue planet. For many centuries people did not know that this planet even existed. Neptune is the smallest of the four gas giants.

PLUTO PLUTO Pluto is a dwarf planet. It is not a planet anymore. Pluto was the only planet to be named by a kid. After the planet was discovered in 1930, an 11-year-old girl named it!

GALAXY GALAXY There are three kinds of Galaxies, Spiral, Elliptical, and Irregular. are very small with only a few million stars. While others could have as many as 400 billion stars, or even more.

UNIVERSE UNIVERSE The universe has distant worlds waiting to be explored by future space craft. Our universe is a large universe and is made of dust, gas, stars, clouds, galaxies, and life.
